I'm 15 at the moment and play football for my local team. I've accepted that i'll never become a professional player but i like the idea of going into management. The problem is i don't know how to go about it. I've seen the FA coaching badges but i'm from Northern Ireland and i'm not sure if its the same here. All i'm looking for on here is any tips on how to go about it or any good websites or information on coaching. Thanks!

Jose Mourinho: A Scottish Football success story.
Scottish managers have always had an impact in the English game. From Billy Davies and David Moyes to Sir Alex Ferguson, the current crop of Scotland managers are influencing the English game just as Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and co did before them. However there is one man who went down the SFA coaching route and who has become the hottest managerial property across Europe. He has been linked with replacing Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Rafa Benitez at Liverpool and even the managerial job at the mighty Real Madrid. And all this from the man who was a translator for the late great Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Spanish club Barcelona in the 1990s. He is affectionately known as the Special One.
Yes thats right Jose Mourinho, the current Inter Milan manager, was a product of the SFA Coaching system at Largs. Certainly his current dwellings are a long way from the West of Scotland seaside town, but thats where he started out as a coach learning his trade. In his 20s he arrived in Largs wanting to learn more in the hope that he could turn his love of the game in a more productive and successful way. And he returned in 2000, when he gained his A-licence coaching badge. And no one could have imagined just four years later that the Special One, would swap Largs for UEFA Cup and European Cup glory.
And tomorrow Mourinho can become one of only a handful of managers to win the Champions League with two clubs, if he beats Bayern Munich in the Bernabeu, Madrid. In fact if he lifts the Champions League, he will lead Inter Milan into the history books as the first Italian club to win the treble, having already won the Serie A title and the Italian Cup already this season.
Back in 2004 Andy Roxburgh said of Mourinho, “I know he has always said he enjoyed his time in Scotland, I remember just last month I was coming back from the Champions League final and was at Dusseldorf airport. Some Portuguese journalists were there also, and approached me. One said: ‘Jose is always going on about his time in Scotland, he said it started him off, and was the trigger for his success in coaching.’ So it’s not coming from our end, it’s coming from him. I remember he spoke a lot about it before Porto played Celtic in the UEFA Cup final.”
“Even to this day he is fond of recalling the time spent at Largs. He’s like an agent for us in Scotland. He’s always making polite noises about it. He came along with some other Portuguese colleagues. Eusebio had been invited before, so maybe that was the connection. He has often said to me: ‘the first step I made was coming to Scotland’. He was a teacher, and had that educated man’s will to learn.
During his managerial career, Jose has overseen 457 games, winning 307, drawn 96 and lost 54, giving him a win ratio of 67.18%. Those stats stretch from his time as manager at Benfica to UniĆ£o de Leiria and Porto – where he won the Uefa Cup in 2003 [beating Celtic in the final] and also winning the Champions League the following season. He also managed Chelsea for three years and has been with Inter Milan since 2008.
With Porto he won the league title twice, won the Portuguese Cup once, the Super Cup once. The Uefa Cup and the UEFA Champions League. Switching Porto for Chelsea in 2004, he stayed for three years and won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup once, the League Cup twice and the Community Shield once. In 2008 he joined Inter Milan where he has won the Serie A title twice, the Coppa Italia once and the Supercoppa Italiana also. And now tomorrow night he faces Bayern Munich and Louis van Gaal, in the Champions League Final for another step towards becoming one of football’s greatest managers.
It has been a long road for Jose Mourinho, but if he does lift the Champions League trophy with the Italians then he will deserve the title the Special One. Certainly a step up from learning his trade in Largs with Andy Roxburgh. But one thing is clear, Jose Mourinho is a Scottish football success story.
