    David Pleat appreciation thread

Dunno about anyone else, but i really like Pleat. His commentary is always pretty insightful, and he doesnt usually just say meaningless cliched nonsense for the sake of it. But he does, on occasion come up with some beauties. We're all familiar with the 'Benanoon' effect, and his commentary below is classic. Pick it up from about 52 seconds in. Firstly, he describes the goal with the words 'top corner', which is entirely the opposite of where the ball goes. And he then follows it up with a somewhat brilliant 'Partridge-esque' "whack".

I was just waiting to hear about it being 'liquid football'

I find him really dull and boring, often just stating the obvious. Clearly we watch different matches!

Pleat's easily one of the best - he offers tactical insight and explanation. I can't think of a single other co-commentator who does that.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I do like him yes . He's a nice blend of intelligent, unusual and unwittingly comical. And if I ever decide to go trawling for whores I'll take Pleaty with me every single time. Legend

Aye, apart from the moments of genius that i've highlighted above, Pleat's really good, very 'no nonsense' and gets his point across quite coherently.

He's articulate and I like his column in 'The Guardian' though they're a bit short. I also like the fact that he doesn't ram down his opinion to people, like the lot of uneducated ones you tend to hear on Sky.

Totally agree here, he has more to say that interests me than Pleat

Taylor's good too - the pair of 'em are about the most insightful around, somewhat unbelievably, although I think Pleat offers more tactical insight than Taylor.

Yep, Taylor's really good as well. Pleat and Taylor are the best two that come to mind actually. With both of them, you can really tell they're very knowledgable and intelligent about football. Both command respect IMO.

It's a shame he has a funny accent/voice though otherwise people would probably take him more seriously!

Yeah and his woeful pronunciation of foreign names. Benyanoon, Sissosko etc.

                              lawrenson to start with.

but I agree Platt is good even if it is just for a few great goals in the late eighties early nineties and a last minute super goal against belgium coutesy of a gazza pass.
