Overrated Players

Was wondering which Premier League players of the past and present do you feel are/were vastly overrated as footballers or just generally loved/hyped too much by the media or fans. It would be good to see if many of us agree with one another on certain players.

Apologies if a similar thread already exists (did search) - in which case please delete this.

I was thinking about this the other day and one pattern seems to emerge, my choices have nothing to with who they play for - I guess it's just more coincidence or because they play for them in the first place they are hyped more.

Wayne Rooney
David Beckham
Paul Scholes
Eric Cantona
Nemanja Vidic
Rio Ferdinand
Ryan Giggs (less so)

I'm sure there's quite a few more given a bit more thought - but those are off the top of my head.

Hmmm I really don't think Paul Scholes or Ryan Giggs can in any way be described as overrated. Especially Giggs.

But staying on the Scum theme, I'll nominate Michael Carrick

seems a weird list, they are all class players on your list so not sure you can overhype them, when in my eyes they are generally class.

James Milner is Vastly over rated. He is good, but not great.
Jermain Defoe is vastly over rated. Very Hot and Cold
Upson many people thiink he is good, i dont.

Then you have players liek Heskey who have been rated when they ahve there 1 season and then go back to type very quickly

but he out of all on that list is genuinely over rated.

before the world cup the media believed that he was single handlely going to carry us to world cup glory.

He on his day is a fantastic talent, but he is way behind Torres/Drogba.

Scholes overrated no way. He's was one of the best midfielders of his generation. His technical ability surpasses all the english overrated garbage of modern times. If i had to choose one player out of Utd's golden generation it would be him to have in the team.

hmm for us...i'd have taken giggs. We've not had anyone worth noting at left mid since paddy berger and even that's up for debate - as good as scholes has been, giggs for me would have been standout for us and I reckon we would have one the league with him at some point

We had Mcmamamammamaman who used to wander out there. Giggs is also a good shout but when the original poster called those to overrated, I thought bit of an over reaction.

Michael Owen, always knew when he lost his pace he wouldnt amount to much.

same goes for anyone who rates Gabby Abonghalor.
