Which illustrates my point. Us 30 somethings know fine well how good Gullit was, but it hasn't been passed down. Kids know all about Maradona, Pele.....they don't all know about Gullit. And I'm sure he's never even heard of Redondo.
        case proven then

Not being funny but 12 year olds !!! Ask Mike or any of the other U20's on here and i would be interested to here there thoughts.

I am thinking when i was 12 in the mid eighties not sure i would have known how good the likes of Best were.

Jan Molby without doubt. Still one of the best players i have ever seen at Anfield.

I don't have the phone numbers of anyone aged between 15-18. 12 was the best I could do. Like I said he knows all about Maradona and Pele, we've talked about them before. I didn't say it proved anything, just illustrates the point.

When I was 12 I knew all about Pele. I had two books about him, plus a Pele skills book which taught you how to curl the ball, perform overhead kicks etc.

Fernandinho - what do you think of Ruud Gullit?

Maradona and Pele are legends whose legacy will never be equalled IMO. The example of your 12 year old cousin shows that. It's incredible though, but I was too young to see Pele but I still was reminded of how great he was by my dad. I saw Maradona's genius for myself when I was a kid.

Maradona and Pele waltzed through world cup campaigns and ended them as living legends. They made their legacy on the biggest stage, which Gullit didn't - he won the European cup with Holland and made his name mainly on the European stage.

People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

Again, John Barnes. What do you think?

He will always be 'underrated' because of his England performances unfortunately.

Again, like Rush a good call. LFC fans know just how great they were, but they're not taken entirely seriously outside our fanbase. Barnes especially, people always cite his below-par performances for England.

I was just too young to see Kenny (I remember the goal at Stamford Bridge, that's it really)....but Rush and Barnes were my time, and my heroes at the time. Barnes is probably my all-time favourite, still. A total genius.

'underrated' might've been a poor choice of word for the title, maybe 'forgotten' or 'under-appreciated' would've been better.

Everyone named in the the thread - Redondo, Hagi, Boksic, Rush etc - were all highly rated, not underrated at all. But many of them are quickly forgotten.
