"I have decided to escape, to defy the shogun. Today I will begin walking the road to hell. But you will choose your own path. So, soon you may be seeing heaven. Choose the sword, and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death. You don’t understand my words, but you must choose. So… come boy, choose life or death."

Being a cypriot you probably know this, but I didn't and thought it interesting. Apparantly the turkish crescent and star was actually the symbol of the city of constantinople - it's actually byzantine. The star was added by one of the emperors and signfies the virgin mary. When the turks nicked the city they also nicked the symbol too.

Now that's what I call history.
They nicked the name "Istanbul" from the Greeks as well. The Greeks would say they were going "is tin poli", which means they were going "to the city", and the Turks adopted that as the name for the City.

Now to shamelessly cut and past from the international forums
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

Yes I knew that much Istanbul means "the city" yes?
They also nicked the idea of the veil. It was actually a byzantine christian tradition that they took up when they invaded. From occupied constantinople it then spread out through the ottoman empire and got incorporated into islamic tradition. Kinda funny when you think of all the recent fuss....

Yes - "in the city".
That is interesting, about the veil. The Muslims pace so much reverence in the teachings of Mohammed , but it is obvious that a loy of their practices are not particularly inspired by the Quaran (sp?).
Also goes to show how good Turks are at taking things that dont belong to them.
