If this was during a penalty shoot out then the goal should not have counted anyway. There's something in the rules about the ball traveling towards goal.

There was the famous France / Brazil shoot out in (86?) where the ball came back off the post, hit the keeper and rebounded in which also shouldn't have stood as a goal during a shoot out. Obviously if its a simple penalty awarded during normal time then all of the above is irrelevant.

You're right and it looks like a penalty shoot out, what with the opposition GK close by!

Shouldn't have been allowed. Unless the laws have changed...

What shouldn't have been allowed? The comedy pen? Why not? How is it any different to the keeper getting a hand to it but not being able to keep it out?

Bit different to hitting the post. The pen was on target but deflected by the keeper and in. Don't know the rule on the direction of the ball being significant. Can you explain?

There is (or was) a law which stated that in a penalty shoot out once the ball goes backwards then the ball is "dead".

Which accounted for the post hit the keeper and in, which was given and shouldn't have been. And similarly in this instance as the ball travelled back off the keeper that meant the penalty was over and no goal given...

Bill's right there was some WC or Euro Championships when this all kicked off.

Eh? What constitutes the ball going backwards? You mean away from goal?
