Newcastle striker Andy Carroll must live with captain Kevin Nolan

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has appeared in court charged with assaulting his former girlfriend.

The 21-year-old is accused of attacking Laurie Henderson at her home in Ponteland, Northumberland, in the early hours of Sunday.

He was granted bail on condition he lives with club captain Kevin Nolan until a further appearance in January.

The court heard Mr Carroll, who gave his address as Newcastle's Jesmond Dene Hotel, will claim self-defence.

    New contract
Magistrates agreed Mr Carroll does not have to stay overnight at Mr Nolan's home when Newcastle are playing.

The player was also told he must not contact any prosecution witnesses. The case was adjourned until 10 January.

The striker helped Newcastle earn promotion back to the Premier League after being relegated to the Championship in 2009.

He recently signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle.

Yes, but you'll forgive me for reading the Geordie element as an acceptance of familiarity. As if the thuggery element was common across Geordies. Hence my defence. It wasn't necessary to pinpoint the lads hometown to amplify the point. I don't know any Geordies myself and have never been to Newcastle but I can only imagine them to be the kindest sweetest unthuggish group of people ever. Your post indicated otherwise (although this was just my interpretation of it so I may be reading more into it than necessary )

Plus he's from Gateshead! South of the water! And yes, he's a horrible thug

It's the aggressively styled hair, alice bands for exercise and penchant for folk music. I knew it would lead to me being labelled a nutty hardcase eventually

Though I might add I found you to be a rather terrifying character too. Had you been within 2 foot of a mouse (sorry touchpad) I'd have been ****ting myself all night.
