Glory coach Ian Ferguson says he is gobsmacked at how seriously some people took Robbie Fowler's tongue-in-cheek bid to sway disgruntled Manchester United star Wayne Rooney to Perth.
Glory continued to play up the joke on Friday, with defender Naum Sekulovski - holding a printout of Rooney over his face - interrupting Ferguson's press conference to introduce himself as the club's new signing.
"I just want to announce our new signing here. We just got him for 45 trillion," Ferguson joked as several Glory players chimed in with chants of "Rooney, Rooney".
But the new Glory coach later expressed his surprises at how seriously some people took Fowler's comments and how quickly the news travelled.
"Yeah I'm gobsmacked it's run as far as it has," he said. "But as you say, publicity is good publicity.
"If we could get him we'd love to have him. But he's way out of our reach."
Fowler got the joke mill running earlier in the week when he said: "It's probably only just come out lately about Wayne Rooney (wanting to leave) but being in the football know, I found out a couple of weeks ago.
"So I just had to go home and see whether he would be interested in coming to Perth.
"And the signs were good. Really pleased with the chat we had and we'll see where it takes us.
"He's very, very interested. I told him what a lovely place it is.
"I told him everything about the city. So he's umming and ahhing at the minute, but it's looking good mate."
Although most people rightly dismissed it as a joke, it still made headlines around the world.
But while that episode proved to be a light relief for Perth, its form on the pitch is no laughing matter.
Glory has slipped to eighth on the table following a club-record five-game losing streak and faces equally desperate Sydney FC in Perth on Sunday.
Ferguson confirmed Fowler would slot straight back into the starting line-up after returning from a two-week holiday break in the UK.
