Real Madrid's Ruben de la Red has finally been forced to call time on his playing career at the age of just 25, and has accepted a coaching position at the Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2012.

The stricken midfielder has not played for los Blancos for two years after collapsing on the pitch during a Copa del Rey match versus Real Union, with medical examinations confirming the existence of a heart condition, for which he was underwent constant supervision since.

The player had remained optimistic of eventually making a return to the game, but Marca reports today that De La Red has accepted a coaching role at the club until his contract expires.

President Florentino Perez had promised De La Red, who earned three full international caps for Spain during his short career, that he would not leave him on the scrapheap after the incident, and the club have given him a role which can develop his coaching abilities alongside Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid Castilla boss Alejandro Menendez.

De La Red’s position is thought help him to progress into working with one of the youth teams at the club and helped players progress through the ranks.

In total, De La Red made just 65 first team appearances for Real Madrid and Getafe in all competitions during his four seasons as a player.

Sad for him. He was starting to look a really good player.

Yeah, it's really a shame. Although rather not have another Puerta.

We were heavily linked with him weren't we at one point? Dodged a bullet there.

        He must be gutted though

IIRC Rafa wanted De La Red as part of the Owen deal but got lumbered with Nunez instead, not sure which would've been worse!

He wanted Granero and De la Red whom have both developed into class players. Also there were rumours around the same time that he was looking into Mata, Javi Garcia and Bueno. De la Red until 2 years ago looked like he was going to be a great player then this struck. Granero is a very good player and should probably leave Madrid to get minutes, where Mata and Javi Garcia have done very well for themselves too. Of those, only Bueno has not developed. Only speculation although it is really interesting for one to contemplate what could've been.

Very tragic news - he was a talented player too.
