      That's what they said

Apparently, there's different types of malaria, some more dangerous/serious than others.

      Perhaps he's got 'safe malaria'.

Malaria's nothing to be worried about. It's just a bit of fever, no more no less.
            Are we winning?

He's probably got the strain that is the 'safest'.

863 000 deaths in 2008 according to WHO (http://www.who.int/malaria/world_mal.../en/index.html), admittedly mostly of children in sub-Saharan Africa though.

As has been pointed out though there are different strains (and I think modern treatment is fairly effective too) and I'm sure he will have one of the less debilitating ones. Nonetheless I hope he is restored to full health soon.

Malaria when diagnosed early is no problem whatsoever. It's only a problem if it gets a hold of you.

I have had malaria, and while it is very unpleasent I could go for a 3-day semi-mountain trek 2 days after I got diagnosed with it and got pills for it.

Most likely it's nothing to worry about although it does take away quite some of your strenght.
