Shouldn't........but
As for Song........decent player, no more than that.
And that's the overwhelming opinion of many Arsenal ST holders I've spoken to..............game discipline/awareness is the one common complaint from all of them. Something that may improve given his age, but its hardly a sure thing to say that'll happen.
Doesn't stand out anymore than many midfielders really...............apart from the **** hair.

I remember many years ago we were playing against Arsenal (maybe the League cup game we got spanked 6-3?), I got a text from an Arsenal mate of mine just saying, "****ing hell, you must be ****, even Song scored against you."
I had little or no idea who he was then.
This season I've seen loads of him and **** me he has developed into some player. The man is a rock. A monster. And a fantastic footballer as well, with an increasing ability to put the ball in the back of the net.
I spoke to that same mate recently and reminded him of his comments. "Yeah, I was wrong. He's immense. Nobody bullys us anymore because of Song. He'll be better than Viera", was his response.
Next time you watch Arsenal, just look at the impact Alex Song has, it's incredible.
A touch OTT fella but Song's a quality player, no doubt about it.
Still think he needs a proper enforcer/defensive midfielder to play alongside him and Fabregas but then where does that leave the likes of Wilshire and Diaby in terms of a place in the side?
I like Song tho - great touch, vision, engine..all round quite the complete midfield player. Could maybe do with scoring a few more goals but when he's used as a defensive midfielder i suppose that's a big ask.

I think the main criticism of Song is included in your post in some ways. He is a defensive midfielder who needs a defensive midfielder beside him. He neither protects his defence well enough when they are ahead (a la Mascherano) nor controls the areas the game is played (a la Alonso or Busquets say) which seems to make him slightly pointless. He is a good player in many technical aspects but he doesn't excel in the two key parts of his role on the pitch.
He is young (and arguably a converted CB) so he may well learn but at the minute lack of game management and defensive intelligence is what is costing Arsenal and he plays in the position that most teams use to provide that.
