West Brom boss Roy Hodgson was tight-lipped on whether he would be interested in replacing Fabio Capello as England manager when quizzed on the topic this afternoon.

The Football Association are meeting today to draw up a shortlist for the vacant position after Capello resigned on Wednesday.

Tottenham's Harry Redknapp is the overwhelming favourite for the role but, with the FA keen to appoint an English or British manager, Hodgson's name is also up there.

Newcastle's Alan Pardew and West Ham's Sam Allardyce have ruled themselves out of contention, but Hodgson - who was strongly fancied to succeed Capello following the 2010 World Cup - preferred to keep his options open.

"I don't think it's right to say whether you're interested or not," he said.

So you know what's coming next.

"The FA need to decide who they think are the right people and to decide what candidates are out there.

"Harry's receiving all the backing from virtually all quarters, but it's up to them to decide what they want to do and I don't think it's right for people like myself to say: 'I'm interested or I'm not interested' in the job because I've no idea what the FA have got in mind and what they want to do."

On what he would do if he was offered the job, he replied: "That's hypothetical. When and if that day comes then I'll be able to take stock of the situation and make a decision, but I think it's arrogant to rule yourself in for jobs or rule yourself out for jobs when there's no indication that anyone's going to want you in the first place."

Hodgson is only under contract at The Hawthorns until the end of the season - and seems quite content with that scenario.

"I think it's right to keep one's options open," he said.

It's the dickheads that can't see through it that amaze me. He must have fooled at lease a few intelligent people - but we are talking football types here.

I want this thread to disappear, like the bodge himself. I just want to forget that episode. Sooner it dies a death, the better.

It's absolutely amazing how incompetent you have to be to pick Hodge over Kenny

That's true, and don't forget we paid compensation for Roy but Kenny was available for free I'm laughing because otherwise I'd be crying

got to be Roy....36 years of international experience for both club and country!

ESPNsoccernet understands that there are dissenting voices within the FA about the possible appointment of Harry Redknapp as the next England manager.

Tottenham boss Redknapp is favourite to replace Fabio Capello in the job long-term, but there are some concerns about his lack of experience at major clubs before his current role, and his total lack of international experience.

An ESPNsoccernet source says: "The word from within the FA is that there is a split and that there are two who have expressed their uncertainty about whether Harry Redknapp is the right man for the job."

The FA will investigate various options after the Holland game at Wembley on Wednesday night and will then formerly draw up their already provisional shortlist of candidates in case it proves impossible to lure Redknapp to the post.

Another to be linked is Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, and his recent trip to London has started the rumour mill churning over whether he would fancy taking over the national job. Chelsea and Tottenham are options should he return to the Premier League, but the FA is keen to find out his intentions before making an approach.

Indeed, Club England managing director Adrian Bevington insisted that the decision would not be taken lightly.

"We haven't spoken to any individual or any club at this stage," he told the BBC. "We're just ensuring we go about it in the right way and we are certainly not going to knee-jerk into anything.

"I am not prepared to answer any questions on who it may or may not be. Obviously we have been talking at length but we have to respect any managers and any clubs during this process and we will do so before we determine the path we want to follow."

If Roy gets the England job, any little amount of passion I have left for England will vanish. I also find it hilarious that the names bouncing around of 'Arry, Roy & Sam (total number of trophies? I'd hazard a guess at one) are being jazzed up by putting Mourinho's name in there ... well, because he's buying a house in London innit.

I'd find this whole situation hilarious, if it wasn't so pathetic.

Thing is, if they interview José I dont see how they can go for anyone else. His record speaks for itself.

Trouble is, they wont interview him. So it doesn't matter.

Shaggy - surely time for another video of Woy telling the FA 'Arry is the wrong man for the job and pleading his case based on a 37 year successful career where he has managed massive clubs like Liverpool, Inter, Halmstats and the UAE.

They are blinkered by this necessity to have an English manager.

What they don't realise, is that all the English managers are ****.

Exactly, how can they look past Redknapp if they are intent on an English manager? If they are going to, then only one manager ticks the boxes of having international experience and top-club experience, and we all know who that is.

Oh dear, they're gonna end up with Roy aren't they
