West Brom boss Hodgson explains dropping Scharner

West Bromwich Albion boss Roy Hodgson has explained dropping Paul Scharner for the draw with Fulham.

Hodgson insisted Scharner’s demotion was more down to the competition for places within Albion’s midfield, where a loss of form will inevitably lead to players being replaced.

“You have to assess what players can and can’t do,” the manager told the Birmingham Mail.

“The fact he accepted responsibility for anything at Swansea had nothing to do with my decision last week.

“Scharner is a very different player to Youssouf Mulumbu, who is different to Graham Dorrans, who is different to Chris Brunt, who is different to Jerome Thomas, who is different to Zoltan Gera, who is different to James Morrison, who is different to George Thorne.

“So there you are – there’s eight of them, yet only four can play.

“If I’d have played Scharner but not Dorrans people would be asking why I’ve left Dorrans out. If I’d left Brunt out it would have been strange, likewise Thomas.”

ROY Hodgson claims West Bromwich Albion’s hierarchy will be grateful for his summer-long pursuit of Shane Long, long after the manager has left the club.

The Albion boss feels the club secured a bargain - rather than an expensive signing - when they paid an initial fee of around £4million to Reading for the striker.

He has scored twice already, with Hodgson expecting more.

“I don’t think we can talk about big fees for people because we are still a Premier League club, along with 19 others so I find it hard to accept we paid a lot for him,” said Hodgson.

“We got Shane Long very cheaply in my view. There have been higher fees paid by this club. I think I have done a very good thing for the club.

“He wanted to work for me, which I’m flattered about, and I think I’ve done the club an enourmous service.

“There will be people thanking me for the signature of Shane Long, long after I’ve gone.

“He will go onto be an even better player who will score many goals.”
