    Terrible News

Macclesfield Town have announced midfielder Richard Butcher has died at the age of 29.

Butcher used to play for Northampton, Rushden, Kettering, Lincoln, Oldham, Peterborough, Notts County and Lincoln.

A club statement read: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce the untimely death of Richard Butcher.

"He passed away at his home in Manchester overnight [on Sunday]. He was an exemplary professional and a thoroughly likeable young man."

The statement added: "Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this very difficult time."

Butcher joined the Silkmen in the summer on a two-year deal following a successful loan spell.

It shocks me who so many young athletes are passing away. Just crazy. Hope his family get the support they need.

My God. I know of him as I know a few Oldham fans who regularly used to slate him.

          RIP.
