Steven Pienaar is now understood to have been given permission by Everton to hold talks with Tottenham.

Skysports.com brought you the news that Pienaar had already held talks with Chelsea, but failed to agree terms and was instead set for a move to Europe.

Tottenham have long held an interest in the Everton star, and the Toffees confirmed that two clubs had made offers - but only one bid had been accepted, the one from Chelsea.

However, Spurs now hope they can succeed where Chelsea failed and agree terms after Everton sanctioned their talks.

But skysports.com understands that as it stands, Pienaar has received big offers from the continent and it would taken a substantial offer to keep him from leaving the Premier League.

Carlo Ancelotti claims Chelsea do not need Steven Pienaar at Stamford Bridge after his potential move broke down.

The Everton midfielder's proposed £3million deal fell through after he was reportedly unable to agree terms with the Premier League champions.

The South Africa international's current contract at Goodison Park expires at the end of the season and Pienaar, 28, is now expected to sign a pre-contract agreement with a major European club.

And Ancelotti now claims the Blues' main target this January transfer window is a central defender.

    Speculation

The Chelsea boss said: "There are a lot of rumours, a lot of speculation and names.

"Maybe sometimes some agents are using the names to earn more money.

"Pienaar is a good player and we know him very well, but this doesn't mean we need to have him play here.

"We are thinking about central defence. If we find the right player for us, we have the possibility to buy."

Everton have agreed a fee with Tottenham over the possible sale of South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar.
Confirmation of the agreement comes just days after a bid for the 28-year-old was also accepted from Chelsea.
Pienaar, who was left out of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, would now seem to have a straight choice between Spurs and their London rivals Chelsea.
He is out of contract at the end of the season and the Stamford Bridge club are believed to have offered £3m.
The former Ajax star joined Everton from Borussia Dortmund on loan in 2007 before completing a permanent transfer for £2m in 2008.

Pienaar was voted the club's player of the season last term but his form during this campaign has not been at the same level.
The Toffees have decided to cash in now to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer. He has previously rejected a new contract at Goodison Park.

If Pienaar makes a move during the transfer window he would be the second player to leave the club in January.
On Thursday striker Ayegbeni Yakubu joined Leicester on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti refused to be drawn on a possible bid for Pienaar in his press conference following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Blackburn.

And speaking after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp suggested the White Hart Lane club would be unlikely to match Chelsea's valuation of the South African - having had their initial bid of £2m turned down.
But it has been reported that a compromise figure of £2.5m might now have been offered.

How many players do Spurs actually need?!

Harry used to be known for his wheeler-dealer approach, but he's a ****ing chequebook manager now.

        ****ing chequebook.

            And about six CBs.

            3 MF Gareth Bale
            6 MF Tom Huddlestone
            7 MF Aaron Lennon
            8 MF Jermaine Jenas
11 MF Rafael van der Vaart
            12 MF Wilson Palacios
            14 MF Luka Modrić
            21 MF Niko Kranjčar
            24 MF Jamie O'Hara
            30 MF Sandro

That list doesn't include Bentley or Rose (young lad that's highly-rated). I guess you could even include dos Santos too. Good to have strength in depth but that's a lot of midfielders.

I remember back in the summer, a couple of us worked out that Spurs midfield (just their midfield players) had cost something like £106m.

Utter utter fortunes, they've spent. The press still think Harry is a miracle worker though.

"It's SO AMAZING how he turned them from the worst team in the league to CL qualifiers "

Pienaar going to Spurs, the number of players they have etc.

I don't even think Pienaar's all that. At all.

Everton's Steven Pienaar has revealed he will join Tottenham after the two clubs agreed a fee of about £2.5m.
The 28-year-old midfielder visited Spurs' training ground on Tuesday and is set to agree a four-year-deal and undergo a medical.
"To end speculation I am going to Spurs," confirmed South Africa international Pienaar on Twitter.
Chelsea also had a bid accepted for Pienaar by Everton, but failed to convince the player to sign.
Neither Tottenham or Everton have confirmed the deal, but Pienaar added: "I've had brilliant years at Everton. It will always be special place in my heart," added Pienaar whose contract with the Merseyside club expires at the end of this season.

Yes although 2 of the players bought above were supposed to be strikers, take them out and that midfield cost 16miilion or so
