It is understood the men were questioned by officers last week, in connection with an incident at a New Year house party in West Lothian.

Neither man has been charged but both are continuing to help police with their inquiries.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that they were investigating a complaint brought by a 24-year-old woman following an allegation of serious sexual assault in Armadale on 2 January.

In June 2008, Goodwillie was arrested after assaulting a man in a Stirling nightclub,[9] which resulted in a £250 fine.[10] Goodwillie was involved in a similar incident in September 2009 when he was arrested after a nightclub doorman was knocked unconscious.[11] Two months later, Goodwillie received a £200 fine for his part in the incident.[12] Dundee United manager Peter Houston placed Goodwillie under a "house arrest" scheme to avoid further trouble.[8]

David Goodwillie rape accuser opens her heart on vile internet abuse after charges are dropped

A YOUNG mum who accused Scotland striker David Goodwillie of rape yesterday revealed her agony after charges were dropped.

She said she was devastated to learn Goodwillie would not face a court - and then suffered further heartache as she became the target of vile internet abuse.

The 24-year-old community worker's ordeal began after she went to police to accuse Dundee United star Goodwillie - whose identity she did not know - of rape.

She told them the attack happened after she ended up at a flat with St Johnstone star David Robertson, who is an old schoolfriend, and £3million-rated Goodwillie on New Year's Day.

But on Monday, prosecutors revealed that they would not be taking any action against Goodwillie as there was not enough evidence.

Now the woman has revealed that she has suffered more agony at disgusting messages on fan websites branding her a "tart, a liar and dirty cow".

And she said she was appalled at fans at matches chanting: "David Goodwillie ... he does what he wants."

Last night, she said she only found out the identity of the man she was accusing when she heard a report of his arrest on the television news.

And she was in a state of collapse when she was told by prosecutors that the rape case against Goodwillie - who was the subject of fevered transfer market speculation last night - was being dropped.

She said: "When I heard the news, I couldn't stop screaming. I thought my world had come to an end.

"But the messages on some of these internet sites, which I was alerted to by friends, have rubbed salt in the wound.

"I cannot understand why people can be so cruel."

The young mum, who has a five-year-old child, met former schoolfriend Robertson at a pub in Bathgate, West Lothian, on New Year's Day and they got chatting.

She had never met Goodwillie before and says she did not even know he was a footballer.

After having drinks with the pair, she ended up in a flat in nearby Armadale.

She said: "Robertson and I hadn't seen each other for a while but we were in the same year at St Kentigern's High in Bathgate.

"I obviously know he's a professional footballer but I didn't know anything about his friend.

"When Goodwillie's identity was revealed in the media, I was stunned."

The woman went through forensic tests at Lothian and Borders Police's Amethyst specialist sex crime unit before Goodwillie was formally charged with rape two weeks later.

Then friends alerted her to cruel messages left on fans' internet forums.

She kept some of them, including posts peppered with vile language branding her a gold-digging liar.

Some of the horrendous abuse brands her a "dirty tart" while others speculate she made up the story because Goodwillie had snubbed her.

She said: "When I learned police were interviewing two SPL players, I was shocked but I wasn't prepared for the outpouring of hate.

"Football forums were filled with horrific messages saying I'm a witch and I should be burned.

"I had a lovely boyfriend and a nice life. Now I feel shattered by everything that has happened."

She added: "While I will never understand the decision not to prosecute, I accept there are restrictions in law.

"I wanted my day in court and I sincerely hope this does not prevent other women coming forward in the future if they feel they have been the victim of a sex crime.

"I cannot thank Rape Crisis Scotland enough for all the support they have given me throughout."

Sandy Brindley of Rape Crisis Scotland said: "Unfortunately, when women have the courage to report rape, particularly when it involves people who are in the public eye, they are the ones who can become subject to the most terrible scrutiny and abuse.

"We are shocked at some the things which have been written about this woman on football fan sites.

"If we can tackle sectarian abuse on these kind of sites, surely we should be able to tackle this kind of vicious and sexist abuse which at times has amounted, in our view, to incitement to hatred."

A Crown Office spokesman said: "After full and careful consideration of all the facts, crown counsel has instructed no proceedings on the basis that there is insufficient evidence in law.

            "The case is now closed."

The woman did not ask for or receive payment for this interview but a donation has been made to Rape Crisis Scotland.
