Sky punish reporter Andy Burton over sexist comments

Sky have disciplined reporter Andy Burton following sexist comments made about a female official.

Burton was "spoken to and warned" about his remarks concerning assistant referee Sian Massey ahead of Wolves' home tie against Liverpool on Saturday.

He will not now be involved in Sky's coverage of Wednesday's Carling Cup tie between Birmingham and West Ham.

Sky duo Andy Gray and Richard Keys were taken off Monday's game between Bolton and Chelsea following sexist comments.

Believing their microphones were off, Keys and Gray were recorded saying that Massey and other female assistant referees "did not know the offside rule".

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "Their comments were totally unacceptable."

Keys has called Massey, who has accepted the broadcaster's apology. She is due to run the line at Gresty Road on Tuesday night, as Crewe entertain Bradford in a League Two encounter.

However, new footage emerged on Monday of Gray talking off-air with Sky Sports' pitchside reporter Burton about Massey.

Sky News reported that the pair discussed Massey's appearance, with Burton referring to Massey as "a bit of a looker" while Gray asks: "What do women know about the offside rule?"

Gray and Keys have been the face of Sky Sports football coverage since the satellite broadcaster started showing English top-flight matches in 1992.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League game, Keys added: "Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her."

Gray quipped: "Women don't know the offside rule."

The comments from Gray and Keys have been widely criticised in football circles, with England captain Rio Ferdinand and West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady voicing their disapproval.

Former England women's cricket captain Rachel Heyhoe-Flint was one of the few to offer public support to Keys and Gray, describing their exchange as "banter".

"I know Richard and Andy very well indeed," she told BBC Radio 5 live. "These were tongue-in-cheek comments and we are blowing something enormously out of proportion here."

The sexism debate even cropped up in Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish's news conference on Monday.

At the start, Dalglish jokingly asked Sky's male reporter whether he minded that there was a woman present.

The Scot's daughter Kelly, a former presenter on Sky Sports News, joked on her Twitter account: "Phew, am exhausted. Just read about something called 'the offside rule'. Too much for my tiny brain. Must be damaged from nail polish fumes."

This is the sexism victim lineswoman pictured off the football pitch.

Sian Massey, 25, posted photos on her MySpace page of her dancing at a party and enjoying a holiday.

Miss Massey, who is said to be ‘sanguine’ about row and hoped to quickly put the matter ‘behind her’, is due back on the pitch as a match official tonight.

But the TV commentators, whose remarks about Miss Massey and a female soccer boss led to them being hauled off the screen by Sky Sports, may have ruined their own careers.

Presenter Richard Keys and pundit Andy Gray, who were suspended for yesterday's game between Bolton and Chelsea, were last night locked in a bitter row over whether to make a public apology.

Miss Massey, who also has a day job as a PE teacher, has accepted a private apology from Keys, according to the Professional Game Match Officials Board.

But campaigners and bosses have urged both men to say sorry on screen for comments made off air but later leaked to the media.

Ahead of Saturday’s Premiership clash between Wolves and Liverpool, they questioned whether a female linesman knew the offside rule.

The commentators, who apparently believed their microphones were switched off, were recorded making disparaging remarks about Sian Massey, 25, before Liverpool’s Premiership clash with Wolves yesterday.

They also criticised Apprentice star and West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady who had yesterday written about sexism in a newspaper column.

Commenting on Ms Massey, Mr Keys said: ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’

'Do me a favour, love': What Keys said about West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady's (above) remarks about sexism in the game

Mr Gray, a former Scottish international footballer, replied: ‘Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule.’

Mr Keys replied: ‘Course they don’t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish) will go potty. This isn’t the first time, is it? Didn’t we have one before?’

Later in the exchange, Mr Keys said: ‘The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.’

Ms Brady had said she had ‘experienced sexism at its rankest, lies about my personal life and a level of calculated mischief that is simply appalling’.

Sky Sports, which quickly apologized after the scandal emerged, yesterday released its own footage of additional remarks to those leaked.

In the new tape, Gray is heard discussing the appearance of Miss Massey and disputing the opinion that she is ‘a bit of a looker’.

Sky’s decision to introduce the tapes into the public domain raises serious questions about his future at the broadcaster.

The 55-year-old is reputed to earn £1.7million a year for his punditry and along with anchorman Keys has been an integral part of the pay TV station’s coverage of football for nearly two decades.

A Sky insider said bosses had ‘let the dogs off the leash’ to protect the Sky brand.

‘There has to be a grovelling apology from both of them.

              Gray(left): 'A female linesman?'
Burton: 'He says she's alright...now I don't know if I should trust his judgement on that.'

Burton: 'He says she's alright...now I don't know if I should trust his judgement on that.'

‘A lot of people have just been waiting for this to happen. Sky have played every bit of footage that incriminates them.

‘From what I can gauge people have been waiting for a long time to knock them off their perch.’

Miss Massey, who is due to officiate at tonight’s League Two match between Bradford City and Crewe Alexandra, is was not at her home in Tile Hill, Coventry, last night and was unavailable to comment.

Andy Burnham suspended from Sky now ? Sexist remark again i think, although what i've heard, all that was said was that Sian Massey was "good looking", Which is a bit lame to get suspendered for imo.

                    Getting a bit beyond now.

Yeah, if he just called her 'a bit of a looker', he doesnt deserve to be sacked or suspended.

If anything, what he needs is one of those employer-funded free eye tests.

Ridiculous... what would happen if one of the SSN girls said one of teh footballers was good looking? Would they be sacked? Think they needed to draw the line under the whole episode and sack Keys, give Gray a final warning and the rest would know the score.

Andy Gray Sacked. Official. NOT apparently for this latest comment, but for an off air comment he made last year.
