    Clubcall

I posted this in the Suarez thread as Imy had mentioned something about Clubcall... Which sent me down memory lane. Then I realised nobody else wanted to walk down memory lane with me (no tweeting on memory lane) so I am moved it to its own thread...

    Ah Clubcall.

I remember when I was about 14 (by christ that is 20 odd years ago) and getting confronted by my mum angrily brandishing a phone bill demanding to know what all these 0891 numbers I had been calling were all about.

It was around the time late night wank lines were invented and I think she feared the worst. To be honest it is probably less embarassing admitting to being locked away in a cupboard 'ripping the head off it' whilst some pre recorded lady informs me off her scanty outfit, than admitting the sad truth, I had spent hours listening to some cock speculate on some alternate 'ins and outs' at Melwood, and who had been spotted at various airports around Europe... Having viewed the advert on teletext... 'Liverpool sign Van Basten?' (always remember the question mark).

Writing **** like that makes you feel like you were around when they first invented the wheel... yet I am only 35. Anyone else have any memories of Clubcall and its like?

i remember ringing clubcall because it said something about us having a new left back.

it turned out it was Traore who had been playing in the reserves and the view inside melwood was we didnt need to sign anyone becasue of this.

i remember clubcall but never called it - i remember seeing the captions on teletext.

Teletext...i used to remember every teletext page no...for example iirc the bbc was 302 for football headlines. - i once, at a wedding in the middle of ****ing nowhere (it was mattb who used to post on here and no posts on st wedding) watched a game on teletext...ie we sat there with teletext on, and every time the screen flickered we jumped up out of seats to see what might have happened.

      the game finished 0-0

I rememeber Clubcall and i think i did ring it once or twice.

The pathetic slow speed they spoke at, and also the constant delaying tactics:

"Yes, you have called Clubcall, the place with all the news. In just a moment, you will hear the latest news and all of the goings on at Liverpool. That's right, all the latest news AND all of the goings on at Liverpool. Thank you for calling Clubcall, the place with all the latest news and biggest scoops. In just a moment, you will be hearing all the latest from Liverpool. All the latest and most upto date news, via Clubcall, the place with all the news and scoops. In just a moment, we will let you know all the latest and upto date news from Liverpool. Thank you for calling Clubcall, the place with all the big news, first. In a moment, you will be hearing....."

Never had the nerve to ring Club Call well not after my mother gave me a hiding for running up a largish phone bill calling the porno chat lines that were advertised towards the back of Zit magazine.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I think that is the genuine Clubcall intro

They totally arsed around for ages before getting to the 'insider' info. A complete and utter scam...

It was all non specific nonsense when you got to the scoop, and ultimately unsatisfying. I should have gone for the more climactic wank lines after all.

Just looked up Clubcall on Wiki.

It seems the clubs themselves received some revenue from this venture...

I think my Mum and Dad may have inadvertently paid for Jason McAteer...

I nevere called, but it was crucial part of the daily teletext browse. I remember checking the headlines on different channels so for example:

on BBC1 "Liverpool to sign Star Player?"
on BBC2 "Van Basten Eyes English Move?"
on ITV "Dutch Master Out Of Liverpool's Grasp"

PS: All the old BBC numbers are still there on digital text
"that is my opinion and that is more important than what anyone else has to say about it" - Mr A.Fergusson, Oct 2011

I also rang Clubcall a couple of times but it was nothing compared to what I did in my later teens when I started ringing horse racing tipping lines ...Derek Thompson and a few other dodgier ones with much grander claims of success. They'd keep you on the phone for about 20 minutes then give you a 1/2 shot FFS. First one they gave me was 8/15 and I lumped on. Came 2nd.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
