Wigan women hit back as Latics star Mohamed Diame brands town 'terrible'

    January 26, 2011

The women of Wigan have hit back in style after footballer Mohamed Diame said it was ‘rare’ to see a beautiful girl in the town.

The Wigan midfielder launched a stunning attack on his new home during an interview with a French football magazine.

The Frenchman, who signed from Madrid club Rayo Vallecano in 2009, dismissed the town as ‘terrible’.

Wigan is terrible, cold and the beautiful women only come out at night, says Latics star Mohamed Diame

Now Wigan’s women are fighting back saying Diame would be lucky to a land a local girl – and warning him not to expect a queue of wannabe WAGs at his door.

Shop assistant Nabila Mezroui, 19, said: “It’s so cheeky, he’s not exactly an oil painting himself. We may not have as good tans as the girls in Madrid, but that’s not our fault – it’s the Wigan weather.”

Wigan resident Lucy Heard, 18, agreed: “He’s completely wrong and I can’t believe he’s said that. It makes me think he's looking in the wrong places.

“There are loads of pretty girls in Wigan and if we’re not enough for him it’s his loss.”

Vicky Burns, 23, said: “He doesn’t sound like he deserves a girl from Wigan anyway.”

Fellow hairdresser Lauren Winstanley, 22, agreed. She said: “He’s the one who’s missing out.”

The proud men of Wigan were quick to leap to the defence of the town’s fair sex, with some even suggesting the £4m star needs to look beyond appearances to find true beauty.

Dave Simpson, 35, of Springfield Road, Wigan, said: “We don’t have the weather but the local girls can brighten up the darkest day.

“It’s not all about looks, and he’ll never get one of his girls from Madrid to make him a cracking meat and potato pie.”

William Clarke, 20, said: “The girls are all pretty in Wigan.

“He’s out of order saying that about Wigan – it’s a great town and I love living here.”

Diame, 23, will not be punished by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan following his controversial remarks.

The Latics star told So Foot magazine: “It (Wigan) has nothing. It’s terrible. The town is very small. It has no atmosphere. I go to training, I come home, it’s all I do.

“During the day it’s rare to see beautiful girls, like in Madrid. By contrast when you go out at night it’s the other way, you think they have been hiding all day.”

Apparently he was dropped from last night's game, due to these comments

Wigan, clearly the hometown of the Keys & Gray fanclub

Unfortunately I know one of those "quoted" girls

I must say though, he's got a point, there's some right biffers knocking around in Wigan at the moment
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

Speaking from personal experience, I can't see much wrong with what he's said!
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

There always seems to be a foreigner spouting on about ugly women in some provincial town.

One of the Middlesbrough players said something similar a year or two back. He may have had a point but having lived there for a few years I can vouch for the fact that they're generally very accomodating.

He's not even saying there aren't any beautiful girls there, all he said is that they only come out at night... Hardly that bad!

The Wigan tourist board should be more miffed than the townswomen.

Maybe the at the moment bit wasn't absolutely necessary

He has a point re the difference between day and night though, either hot girls from Wigan* are strictly nocturnal, or some weird transformation occurs when the sun goes down

I was born and grew up in Wigan, and he's right it is a **** hole.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
