Referee Mark Halsey Twitter abuse condemned
Referee abuse has been condemned by the Professional Game Match Officials after insulting tweets to Mark Halsey.
"(We) abhor any abuse of match officials... in stadia or outside of it," the English referees' body said.
Halsey received the tweets referring to his throat cancer in 2009 after officiating over Manchester United's 2-1 defeat of Liverpool on Sunday.
He also drew criticism from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers after sending off Jonjo Shelvey for a bad tackle.
"We could control our players' performance but what we can't control is decisions by the referee," he said, after Halsey also awarded Manchester United a controversial late penalty, which Robin van Persie converted.
Red card disappoints Rodgers
Liverpool fans later took to Twitter to criticise Halsey's decisions, making reference to him dying of cancer.
The PGMO said psychological support was available to referees: "Our main concern is towards Mark and his family, and like with all match officials, there is a backroom team who are there for them.
"This includes a sports psychologist, who has worked extensively with the select group, including Mark, over the past few years.
"Mark has already benefited from the support of all of his colleagues and they will continue to back him this week."
Referees' union Prospect has also come out in support of the referee, calling the tweets "beneath contempt".

Giving someone ****e about cancer is really low.
The thing is we have a strong arguement after yesterday, and this kind of thing just ruins it. Needless to say this 'twitter abuse' is deemed newsworthy by the beeb, and the Manc fans disrespect doesn't get a lookin...

It is a **** sandwich.

little meltdown earlier, sorry chaps
I stand by the fact that if Jonjo was a red so was Evans but perhaps I could have put it better.
Halsey had a shocker yesterday but regardless it's only football, nobody deserves to receive abuse like that over a football match, utterly sickening and considering the tone of the occasion anyone from LFC found guilty of saying those sorts of things should be banned from Liverpool permently.

this mean red for evans only, simple as that... other than evans's two footed jump in to the tackle, it was a 50/50...Originally posted by Norbert Dentressangle View PostAlso, Shelvey's left peg was no where near the challenge, Evans went in two footed. ****ing awful decision by the referee and cost us our most effective player up to that point
we must appeal this decision, we cannot allow the manure biased FA walk all over us.removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

We appeal it and Shelvey will get another game added onto the ban.Originally posted by baitman View Postthis mean red for evans only, simple as that... other than evans's two footed jump in to the tackle, it was a 50/50...

but only if they uphold the decision. if evans was the more dangerous tackle [two footed, so should be nailed on] then surely shelveys would be overturned.Originally posted by Chazza1978 View PostWe appeal it and Shelvey will get another game added onto the ban.removing all the weak links makes us stronger
