Blackpool may have to play striker Beattie in goal

    Published 23:00 10/02/11 [Mirror]

James Beattie could end up in goal for Blackpool if the Seasiders fail to land special dispensation to bring in a new keeper.

The Tangerines are down to one shot-stopper after Paul Rachubka damaged his knee again in training.

Matt Gilks is already out, which leaves only the half-fit Richard Kingson available for the clash with Aston Villa.

So Beattie has stuck his name down to fill in for Kingson, who has already needed substituting once this season because of injury.

“Richard is more patched up than anyone in my squad," said Holloway. “Beatts is pretty confident but I haven’t seen him do it yet. Hopefully we’ll get a sub goalie otherwise at this level it will be an absolute joke.”

Holloway admits he will be livid if Beattie does end up having to fill in between the sticks. He said: “That would make this whole division a lottery.

“How can you have the best league in the world and some little rule makes it a lottery and a joke? That’s what it will be if they don’t sanction me a chance to get another goalie.

“If I was a manager and played Aston Villa and they didn’t have a goalkeeper on the bench, I’d say: 'Go and get one' because I wouldn’t try to snap on to that as an advantage.

“I wouldn’t then say , 'Step on his toe at a corner' so they haven’t got a goalie. That shouldn’t be how this season is sorted.”
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

      That would be hilarious!

      Shoot on sight.

When I was a kid me and my mate sometimes played each other at Kick Off 2 - Crystal Palace v Crystal Palace and we both had to play an outfield player in goal. We always picked Rudi Hedman ...he was ****. Shoot from your own half and it'd go in

I remember when I used to play Saturaday 11 a side in a really crap football league. One season we started the campaign with our recognised keeper having left us and we had no-one, so one of the lads brought a mate down who he said was a "decent" keeper.

He was ****, no joke, it really was a shoot on sight policy. The day he played for us, we were playing an even more abject team than us lot (Kwik Drinks company). They'd been beaten 8/9 nil by most teams. They beat us 9-1 that day. Players with 2 left feet and slippers on were hitting tame pea rollers from 25 yards and our 'keeper' was bending down to pick them up and they'd literally roll between his hands and arms and nestle weakly in the back of the net. It really took the piss.

You can't play 11 a side without a haf decent keeper or else it does just make a mockery of the game.

Have they not got any reserves/academy players who are better than Beatie?
