FORMER England football star Paul Merson was arrested yesterday for suspected drink-driving after he cheated death in a motorway smash.

The Sky Sports pundit admits he fell asleep at the wheel of his £40,000 Mercedes before crashing into the central reservation and a lorry.

Merson, 43, was arrested after being given a breath test on the hard shoulder of the M40 shortly after 3am.

He escaped from the 70mph crash yesterday with facial injuries and was taken to hospital where police took blood samples for analysis.

He left hospital with bloodstains on his suit and white shirt. Stitches covered a wound above his left eye.

I was taken to a Jeff Stelling audience last night, Merson was a guest.

It emerged, I didn't know it previously, that while at Boro, Merson, Gazza, Jimmy 5 Bellies and Merson's brother shared a house. ****ing madness.

A couple of decent anecdotes from it. They used to play a game where they'd have massive jugs of wine on a table and would each throw a pile of money in to the middle. They'd then proceed to drink a glass with a sleeping tablet, the last one awake took the pot Abother was that Gazza bought a house that had a ghost attached. First thing he did was put locks on the windows and doors. When asked why, it was to keep the ghosts out
