Chelsea defender David Luiz has emerged as a shock target for Spanish giants Barcelona.

According to Catalan publication Sport, the Brazilian international is seen by the Barcelona hierarchy as an adequate replacement for Carles Puyol, whois entering the twilight of his career.

Barca are being cautious over any such move, but are thought to be preparing a bid in the region of £30 million for the centre-back.

Despite only moving to Chelsea in January for a reported £25 million, the former Benfica defender is being touted to leave west London already.

Head coach Pep Guardiola has identified Luiz as a player who could easily slip into the Barcelona team. Guardiola is thought to be a fan of Luiz's speed and ball control, as well as his physicality on and off the ball.

According to the player's agent Giuliano Bertolucci, the 24-year-old wouldwelcome interest from the reigning Champions of Europe, and "considers Barcelona the best team in the world."

Barcelona have set their sights on Luiz after negotiations with AC Milanover the protracted move of Thiago Silva collapsed, with the club blocking any such move. Barca are thought to be attempting to renegotiate, by offering Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a player exchange deal.

Although it is still early in the transfer window, there are suggestions that Barca could offer Chelsea a cash plus player deal, with the Blues known admirers of Blaugranes starlet Thiago Alcantara
