Rising football star Baerke van der Meij, aged one, is signed by club
Toddler Baerke van der Meij has been signed up to a Dutch football team after winning YouTube fame following a quick kickabout against his toybox.
With a little help from his father, the diminutive forward put crayon to paper and sealed the deal.
He then posed for pictures standing on the desk wearing a miniature replica shirt. Online commentators have already compared him with national stars such as Denis Bergkamp and Arjen Robben.
The contract was celebrated at the stadium with a glass of orange juice, and the club said, while their potential future star’s vocabulary was still limited, one word was enough – ‘bal’.
‘The toddler’s favourite position has not yet been determined,’ the club said in a statement.
‘However, we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly, football genes via his grandfather.’
