    Two lower leg breaks this week in MLS

    Mullan breaks Zakuani's leg

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVySrSYH2VM"]YouTube - Steve Zakuani broken leg[/ame]

    Leathers breaks 2010 Most Valuable Player Ferreira's ankle (**** video, only one I could find)

    League not sure how to handle this... ten-game suspension for Mullan, but twice in one week and one of the big stars of MLS... The game is improving over here, but the officiating and the league management still a problem.

        10 game ban is a bit harsh
        I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

        Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          no i wasn't being serious as such. but for me neither of those tackles were deliberate leg breakers. of course the end result is bad for the player involved but it appears to be down to bad luck that it happened twice in a weekend.

          I remember tackles and potential leg breakers all the time growing up and you accepted it and moved on. These days there seems to be so much play acting, jumping out of tackles and rolling around that when one someone actually makes contact everyone is up in arms. Look at the fuss over a mistimed tackle from Carra on Nani. If Nani's leg had snapped in half, it would have been the same tackle that carra made, only that it resulted in a deep gash, it wasn't a deliberate act of violence. It just seems that public opinion now it that when the tackle results in a bone break rather than a cut, bruise or whatever the player that caused the damage should then be banned from the game for life. It's bollocks.

              Another one today; Javier Morales of Real Salt Lake has his ankle broken on a tackle from behind...

              Make it three... an epidemic of **** tackles in MLS.

                Sad for the injured players. The punishment should fit the tackle though, not the injury that occurs. To do otherwise makes no sense.

                  That certainly has to be part of it but I think you also have to have a general clamp down in matches. The changes in rules, interpretation and refereeing practice have made a massive difference in the PL and we are still much more lenient than most continental leagues. Adding rules that aim at prevention are probably as important as ensuring proportionate punishment in terms of changing the way things happen.

                  Although I agree that justice demands that each players case is taken on its own merits.
