Arsenal have agreed a deal for Gervinho according to latest reports and I think its been put on the official website too. I'm not sure whether that means they will back out of the Mata chase or try to sign both.

A statement on the Premier League club's website read: "Arsenal Football Club announces that Ivory Coast international forward Gervinho will shortly join the Gunners, subject to a regulatory process."

I'd love us to sign Mata but i really cant see it happening if we buy Downing

Me neither sadly. Like I've said before, take Suarez out if the equation and our attack seems a bit predictable. Don't even have Benni to call on for spark nowadays.
          3rd place. Worst champions ever.

My feeling is that any move for Mata with Downing will happen only if we sell both of Aquilani and Meireles or think that Gerrard will only be a bit part player this season. I think we will invest pretty heavily this summer knowing that we could get 4th with Arsenal seemingly in trouble in terms of player retention.

Do Arsenal signings have to sing a song in front of players and staff too?

I didn't realise it was such a key element to securing the transfer.

Mata can play in a number of positions whereas Downing can ONLY play as a left midfielder so signing Downing wouldn't necessarily rule out Mata imo...

Downing played on the right a lot last season I think, and behind the striker the odd time (I think, I don't know for certain )

..but yeah, I wouldn't rule out Mata either

He did which is why I said that he will displace Kuyt if we sign him.

He can play on either wing if Kenny wants him.

Downing is ok, 20 mill is a lot of money for him imo, a lot of money.

If we get him I hope he's worth the outlay. I'd rather we went for someone a bit more exciting tbh but we have to trust Kenny and his staff on this one I guess.

He was horribly predictable playing on the right ALWAYS cutting onto his left side...

Kenny's track record for signing players is pretty mixed.

In 87 he got it pretty much spot on but since then his record is rather shaky.
Jacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

Name me one manager who has a 100% success rate on transfers. Or anywhere close to it.

A mixed track record is not a good reason to doubt his judgement, any more than the fact he's got it "spot on" in the past indicates Downing (or any other specific signing) is sure to be a success.
                              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
