I think that he wanted to stay at Valencia but didn't had any other choice than to leave. Valencia had to get in some money to pay some of their debts.

Pepe probably talked to him and knew that he wouldn't come to us and that is why we didn't make a bid.

Highest bid won and Mata accepted it whatever club that made the highest bid out of respect for Valencia.

That would also explain why he didn't sign for Arsenal before his low buy out clause expired a few weeks ago. He wanted Valencia to get more money.

No he didn't as wages are definitely extremely important part of any player's decision who to play for but he may still not be too happy that is Chelsea even after rejecting Arsenal and Spurs.

He could easily got £100k+ in wages at another club. Mata is one of the most honest players out there IMO.
