I never wanted him, not because he's ****, because he clearly isn't, but I haven't seen too much of him to make my mind up, but what I have seen of him makes me think I'd choose Downing every day of the week for the role that we need most in the team. Mata reminds me of Silva. Another good player, but they always cut inside.

seen enough of Mata to know he is a superb footballer and will be a fantastic aquisition for someone. But I would choose Downing over him becuase he is premeiership ready and is clearly a very good player even if he wont ever reach the heights Mata will, but it may take Mata a season or so to Acclimatise to the premiership, we cant afford to take that chance.

Anyway, I think we wil get him next summer

I was just being silly after a few comments about him yesterday and how some opinions seem to have change based on one friendly

Thought he got a good reception from our fans when he got subbed which was nice to see.

You know the guy commentating with Gary Gillespie? Does anyone else think he trawls forums for transfer speculation.

The reason I ask is that he seems to know a lot about players we as fans would like to see such as Banega and Mata, players we haven't necessarily been linked with through the press but players we all like to be linked with ourselves on here.

Exclusive: Chelsea fall short with £22m bid for Valencia ace Juan Mata

Chelsea have had a £22million bid for Valencia winger Juan Mata rejected by the Spanish club.

Roman Abramovich made the offer - £18m up front and £4m to follow - on Wednesday after Andre Villas-Boas identified the 23-year-old, also a target for Tottenham and Arsenal, as the man he wants out wide to help bridge the gap on champions Manchester United.

Valencia are determined not to let Mata go so close to the start of the season in Spain - this weekend's start has been delayed due to a player strike - but the player is desperate to leave for Stamford Bridge.

Such is Chelsea’s desire to sign Mata, who was the star of this summer’s Under 21 European Championship, that Abramovich is considering flying to meet Valencia president Manuel Llorente to push through the deal.

An extra £4m should be enough to force Valencia’s hand, which would be a huge bonus considering there was a buy-out clause of £22m which expired at the end of July.

Mata has been keen on a move to Chelsea all summer and has been promised a pivotal role, a pay rise and Yossi Benayoun’s No 10 shirt by the London club. That should be enough to see off the persistent interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.

Mata scored nine and set up 15 goals for Valencia last season, coming on the back of being part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad.

I love it when they say something like this. As if his appearance is going to make any ****ing difference and why wouldn't he attend a meeting where he was going to spend £20m+ of his money. Love how the papers make out like they are demi-gods that would not normally lower themselves to attending a meeting.
