Chopra's gambling debts at centre of drugs trial

HUGE gambling debts run up by former Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra were at the centre of a drugs trial today.

The star’s debts and alleged links to the underworld were laid bare at Newcastle Crown Court.

Former Bluebirds, Newcastle United and Sunderland striker Chopra owed shadowy figures up to £250,000 because of his out of control gambling habit, jurors were told.

The chief executive of the forward’s current club, Ipswich Town, told the cocaine plot trial in Newcastle of the extent of the player’s gambling problems.

Simon Clegg OBE, said one of the men accused of the drugs offence, John Somerville was known to Chopra’s father and had offered his help in paying off the debts.

Somerville and three other men are on trial accused of being part of a cocaine ring worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, which they deny.

Mr Clegg, speaking on a video link to the court, said: “The people Michael owed money to were not respectable financial institutions, they were not the sort of people I would be going to if I wanted to borrow money.

“Michael was concerned about paying the money on time.

“He made it very clear to me he had to pay the money back.

“I was under the impression he had to pay the money back or he would find himself in trouble.

“There has been a visit to the training ground at Ipswich by people trying to receive some money from Michael.” Mr Clegg said he arranged for Chopra to receive residential rehabilitation at the Sporting Chance clinic, set up by former Arsenal captain Tony Adams who battled alcohol problems.

Mr Clegg went on to say the club were aware of Chopra’s gambling habit when they signed him in June and agreed to pay him around £250,000 to pay off his debts.

Mr Clegg said: “I was led to believe there was someone by the name of John Somerville who was known to Michael’s father, who could help in such matters.

“I believe John Somerville was party to a conversation on the phone when Michael was in my office and his father and John Somerville were at the other end of the phone.

“John Somerville’s role was he was going to assist Michael’s father in the closure of some of the debts in the North of England, in the region of £125,000.”

“John Somerville had a relationship with some of the people Michael owed money to.” Mr Clegg said he did not know Somerville was charged with drug offences and Chopra has accrued further gambling debts since joining Ipswich.

Somerville is alleged to have thrown £12,500 of cocaine out of his car window in Gateshead with police on his tail.

Months later police found a flat in Washington turned into a drugs factory. Somerville, 51, of Sherringham Avenue, Kenton, Newcastle, Daniel Chisholm, 49, of Franklin Street, Sunderland, Joseph Lewins, 53, of Malvern Road, Lambton, Washington and Christopher Bacon, 31, of Ashwood Terrace, Sunderland, all deny conspiracy to supply cocaine.

The trial continues.
