If your team was scored on by a lithe Brazilian striker down at your local park sometime during the past couple of decades you could be part of history. As the 41-year-old Romario approaches the magical number of 1,000 goals scored over his career, it is becoming more and more obvious that his magical number is more of a mystical one and even the most minor of goals count for something. It has been evident for a while now to Pele and others that Romario’s accounting skills are not as sharp as his scoring skills, but little did we know just how far he is willing to stretch things to become just the second player in history to notch 1,000 goals.

Two of his goals, for example, were scored during a festive match in 2004 between members of Brazil’s World Cup winning side from 10 years earlier and a team of retired Mexican internationals. Romario has also scored for unlikely-sounding outfits as “Friends of Aldair” and “PSV Stars” and against teams such as “Friends of Luisinho.” No offense to Friends of Aldair, but when I was playing striker for Friends of Blogger Bob I scored a hat-trick against them too. Their left side was weak that year.

Digging deeper into the numbers one finds that just 749 of Romario’s goals were scored in full internationals and competitive club games. That is still a lot of goals and worthy of admiration especially since he has continued to score late in his career, but still there is something cheap about setting all your efforts on a record that isn’t even a record. It would be truly admirable if Romario decided to celebrate two goals from now by thanking the crowd for being on hand for his 751st goal.

He's clearly doing everything he can to get to 1000 goals - same as Pele did. Pair of cheating ****ers

        Haha - Pele's a ****. Read this:

Brazil legend Pele insists Barcelona forward Lionel Messi must score at least 1283 goals during his career to be crowned the best ever player.

Speaking after his former club Santos beat Penarol 2-1 to lift the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday evening, the 70-year-old told the press: "Messi better than Pele? To get there he needs to score more than 1283 goals."
And then consider (according to Wiki) that he actually added about 500 to his total through friendlies.

At least, given his condition, we can be fairly sure Pele has finally stopped scoring.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Pele's the worst example of insecurity - for someone who is as highly regarded in the game, to have to blow his own trumpet, is embarrassing.

Great story told by Mark Bright, about when he once bumped into Pele in a lift, at some footballing event. He struck up some small talk and told Pele (who hadnt heard of him) that he was a footballer and, like Pele, was a striker.

Pele replied "Oh, that's good. How many goals did you score?"
To which Bright said "160" (or whatever it was, i'm just making up that figure).

And Pele replies: "Oh. [pauses then smirks] I scored a thousand."

The story would be better, however, if it ended with Pele nutting Bright.

it would. But that would make it untrue.

Bright told the story himself on an episode of the Baddiel & Skinner World Cup podcasts, from 2006

I've played a couple of games a week for nearly 15 years, and average 2 goals a game so I must be close to that, can I stake a claim for being the best player in the world?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Pele probably sits there editing his own Wiki page and adding goals from when he played football in the school playground.

And why does he refer to himself in third person? For goodness sake.

Pele was the best in the world for 20 years. He was the standout player in one of the best international teams of all time. We like to think he was part of a lesser era, but his contemporaries Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Plattini, Moore etc are also genuine legends of the sport.

Yes, his 1000 goals is padded out, but don't let that distract you from his genius.

It's IMO impossible these days to consider the Puskas' and De Stephano's etc in the same way. We simply don't have the recorded evidence. Even anecdotaly they are fading out of living memory.
