Joey Barton is set to sign a six-month loan deal with Fleetwood Town from QPR, BBC Radio Lancashire reports.
The 29-year-old midfielder is due to serve a 12-match suspension at the start of the season and will return to action sooner at the Cod Army because they play more games early on.
He could now return on 6 October or sooner, six weeks earlier than if he stayed at QPR.
Joey Barton could make his Fleetwood debut against Cheltenham at Saturday, 6 October (sooner if they have cup runs), whereas 17 November's game with Southampton would have been his return date if he stayed at Loftus Road (barring a cup run)
QPR deny holding discussions about a loan move to the League Two side.
Barton played 45 minutes of Fleetwood's friendly with Kilmarnock on Tuesday and is now hopeful of playing against Tranmere in Saturday's friendly.
The one-time England international agreed to join the Football League newcomers for a week during pre-season, but was not expected to play a match.
He knows several Fleetwood players from his younger days and has a close friendship with Cod Army forward Andy Mangan.
Barton was sent off on the final day of last season as QPR lost at Manchester City and was later found guilty of two counts of violent conduct by the Football Association.
The midfielder was initially shown a red card for an off-the-ball clash with City striker Carlos Tevez and incidents with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany came after Barton had been dismissed.
He received a four-match ban for the foul on Tevez and another eight for his further offences.
Rangers fined Barton six weeks' wages and stripped him of the club captaincy, as well as leaving him out of the squad for their pre-season tour of Malaysia.
The former Manchester City and Newcastle player would be eligible to make his competitive Cod Army debut against Cheltenham on Saturday, 6 October - or could even return in September if they have runs in the League Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Had he stayed at Loftus Road, the 17 November game against Southampton would have been his return date barring progress in the League Cup.
When the idea was first mooted, former Manchester City defender Danny Mills told BBC Sport: "If it was me I would say it was a great idea. It's not against the rules, some might argue it's against the spirit of the game, but until that loophole is closed then why would you not exploit it?"
Joey Barton says his loan move from QPR to Marseille could be off
Joey Barton has said that his move from QPR to Marseille looks to be off.
He is currently serving a 12-match ban after being sent off against Manchester City on the final day of last season and wrote on Twitter: "Doesn't look like this Marseille thing is going to happen now."
The midfielder added: "Been forced to go back to training with the kids".
Earlier this week Barton, 29, had claimed he was close to a loan move to the French side.
A deal was agreed in principle last week, with QPR keen to bring Marseille midfielder Stephane Mbia to Loftus Road as part of the deal.
"Hopefully QPR and Marseille can finalise the deal in the next few days," the former Manchester City and Newcastle player had said. "My heart is already in the Velodrome."
Barton spent a week training with League Two side Fleetwood Town after he was left behind while Rangers toured Malaysia in pre-season.
He was also fined six weeks' wages and stripped of the captaincy by QPR manager Mark Hughes over the summer, after the FA issued the ban for his sending-off when the midfielder clashed with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.
I really thought his sterling work in promoting the Hillsborough petition and everything else he's done would've bought him a bit of grace with our fanbase. Sad really. He's not perfect obviously and has become a bit of a caricature, but he makes it more interesting and I'd prefer to have players like him than every single one of them be a dull-as-ditchwater media-trained sap.
I'll always respect him for the work he put in re Hillsborough.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
I didn't know he'd been castigated. You'd have thought that might have calmed him down.
. Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I'm not really aware of what he's done for the Hillsborough campaign. I don't suppose I'm the only one, so maybe it's partly lack of awareness.
I suspect though that the fundamental problem is he's good and yet he's also bad. We like our villains (and our heroes) one-dimensional, thank you very much.
Of course the media don't help most of the time but that's a bit of a lame excuse, even without awareness of his Hillsborough work.
