    Player statistics

I see sometimes that people post links to a website with players stats etc for instance the player who's played the most passes, made the most tackles in comparison to 4 or so other players who also have good stats.

Can anyone guide me towards this site or a similar site at all please?

    Many thanks!

This site has the 50 players for each of the catagories of goals, passes, tackles, shots
etc, but doesn't have every category for each player:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...tatistics.html

You could then look up under the clubs stats pages and cross reference for example LFC player stats are here:

A little time consuming if you only want to look at a few players (and you know which ones), but is probably too time consuming if you have alot or don't know which players you want to look at.

EDIT: the way Est shows the links they look the same but are actually different

Downing 7 goals, 7 assists in a team that was struggling for most of the season

It was playing centrally though - is that what we want him for. Not criticism of him by the way, I quite like him, but it's difficult to judge a player when they are doing a different job for a team with different ambitions. I'd suggest his versatility is a plus but at the highest level there are still question marks about him as a wide player.

Do you think it's been a lack of support that's hampered him developing as a higher quality winger, or has he lost a bit of pace? I've got to admit to not really having paid much attention to him. Still can't believe he's only 26, seems like he was playing for Boro 10+ years ago

To a degree I never thought he had great pace, or perhaps it's acceleration he lacks. Most of my memories of him in big games involve him pushing it past someone and them beating him to it or easily blocking him. From my point of view it mostly looks like a player who never found a manager who could improve him tactically in order to minimise the impact of the weaker parts of his game.

He has a great cross on him and his passing always looks neat to me. The more I think about it the more I wish we got him instead of Riera. I liked Riera a lot as a player who bought balance to our team and who worked well with Rafa's ideas. I think Downing would have done equally well and not had the issues off the field or with training - hence being a better long term investment.

I'd be very interested to see what Kenny did with him. I don't think he'll become a world beater but he has it in him to be a very useful 'cog in a machine' player, even for a top club, IMO.

I can see him being like Riera, in that individually he doesn't look a great player, but his inclusion in the team gives us another dimension to our game, making the team more effective. Riera did that job very well the season we finished 2nd, and we were a different team when he played.

Would he work well in a 4 man midfield of Downing - Lucas - Miereles - Gerrard or Downing - Gerrard - Lucas - Kuyt, behind Suarez and Carroll?

Both options look balanced and creative to me, not that Gerrard will ever be employed out wide right again imo

I think he would give a lot of options in both three and four man midfields - which is a big plus. Thinking of our midfield without considering Henderson seems odd.

One of my main hopes for the summer is that we emerge with a squad that looks coherent without Gerrard. To me our central midfield lacked dynamism and physicality without him in the last couple of seasons. I'm not sure quite how well Downing & Henderson would counter those problems. That said Downing is pretty solid defensively and him covering from one flank might take the pressure of someone like Meireles centrally to fly into tackles.

Suddenly we seem to have options almost materialising as a dilema on how to accommodate players. Last season we were lost as soon as Torres and Gerrard were out injured or off form.

I really hope we sign Downing, against popular consensus, he has the right attitude to the game as is good enough to be a regular in a top 4 side. World beaters come with baggage and I'm sure Dalglish is trying to steer us away from that. I can't remember there ever being an big ego type player back in the teams of the 70s and 80s, the closest off the top of my head I'd guess would be Saunders or Keegan. The rest, no matter how great, were happy to be cogs in the wheel and never threw hissy fits. That comes from being in a great side of course, which we clearly are not at the moment.
