    Barton denied US visa

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been left out of the team's pre-season tour of America after the US Embassy refused to grant him a visa.

In 2008 he was jailed after admitting assault in Liverpool city centre.

In the same year he was given a suspended sentence for an assault on a team-mate at Manchester City.

Barton, 28, said that he regretted not being able to go, but did not expect to be treated more favourably than anyone in a similar situation.

Newcastle are due to depart for the US on Sunday, with matches scheduled against Sporting Kansas, Orlando City and Columbus Crew.

Barton will travel to Holland with the club's reserve team, which will play Hollandia, FC Utrecht and Almere City.

The midfielder said: "Unfortunately, I was denied my visa due to my past.

"I regret not being able to travel with the club on this trip, but at the same time, I don't expect to be treated any differently or more favourably than anyone else in a similar situation.

"All I can do is continue to improve as a person, which is what I intend to do."

He added: "Again, apologies to all the NUFC supporters, as well as the fast-growing legions of football supporters, in the United States who I was looking forward to meeting.

"I will see you in the future."

I wouldn't bank on it Joe.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Seems like a guy who's making at effort at turning himself around. I don't know how possible it is to conquer whatever is in him that made him do the things he did - aside from getting older - but it's hardly made any easier by the money he earns and the lifedtyle of those around him earning the same.

He's from a horrible background and done some awful things but I'd really like to see him come good.

The amount of thuggish behaviour he's exhibited, it does seem like turning an oil tanker.

Probably. Interesting to see if he does it or whether he has some monumental blowout again on the future. I see him as a social experiment that I'm observing from the safety of my own computer. In another country. Anonymously.

Not sure where he said it, but just seen this in the "quotes of the week" section on the Sky Sports website:

"Hate to say this but I struggle with Ed Miliband because of his lisp. Sorry leader of the country cannot have a speech impediment. I've nothing against lisps in everyday life just authoritarian figures having them especially elected ones. Labour no chance next election. They should of put his brother in charge, better front man. Also he stabbed his brother in the back for top job. Ed is a helmet IMHO." Perhaps only Andy Coulson has less chance of landing a communications gig than Joey Barton.

                            WTF?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Reece, that last bit - "Ed is a helmet IMHO" - surely a sly little edit?
                              Hello mert.
