I doubt that they will play in the second division. The Argentine FA will find a way so they can continue to play in the highest division.

The FA and the league would lose a lot of money if they allowed River to be relegated.

Maybe two more teams in the highest division from next season....

Controversy may be set to ensue as the footballing body give the go-ahead to plans to extend the country's top league, with relegated River Plate the biggest winners

The Argentine FA has approved plans to restructure the country's league system, where the number of clubs participating will increase from 20 to as many as 38 by the beginning of the 2012-2013 season.

The members of the board met on Monday to discuss the new arrangements, and have decided to reform the current Primera Division into a brand new championship which would incorporate sides from the current Nacional B Division, Argentina's second-level league, and the 2011-12 champions from Torneo A Argentino and Primera B Metropolitana, both of the nation's third-level leagues.

The new system has been given the green-light to be implemented in 2012-2013, and will be divided into two zones of 19 teams, allocating Argentina's most illustrious outfits equally, with the likes of River Plate, Boca Juniors, Newell's Old Boys and Rosario Central given priority.

The top five teams in each area, together with the combined, nine highest-ranked teams will form the Torneo Cameponato, a tournament in which the champion will be crowned as the country's league winners. The 19 remaining teams will play out the remainder of the season in the newly-revised format.

An AFA spokesman confirmed that the new championship will start in 2012.

Does anyone know if this is a move long planned that the relegation of River Plate has allowed to gain momentum or a ludicrous quick fix dreamed up to save a prestigious club? A lot of South American football experts (or at least writers) have long complained about the organisation of the Argentine and Brazilian domestic leagues. With Argentine clubs going so poorly in the Libertadores perhaps this has come at the right time?

I think that the new leagues will only be a quick fix. In say three or four years time they will go back to one league again with 20 teams in it and played in a similar way to the PL. That means a 38 game season.

They had to do something really and it isn't only about River Plate going down. River going down made things happen sooner than it would have if they had stayed up IMO.

River Plate Relegated, Think again!

Reorganization plan to combine top 2 divisions.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The Argentine Football Association wants to reorganize its first division, which will almost certainly guarantee a swift return to the first tier for relegated River Plate.

The AFA announced a plan late Monday to unify the country's first- and second-tiers into one league, divided into two regional divisions.

The proposal must be approved by AFA's executive committee, according to AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo. A decision is expected on Oct. 18, he said.

The plan is expected to be enacted in time for the 2012-13 season, meaning that River Plate, which was relegated last month for the first time in its history, is likely to return to the top flight after just one season in the second division.

The new league would be made up of 38 teams and would do away with the Apertura and Clausura tournaments. As in much of Latin America, the season in Argentina is currently divided into two parts with a champion crowned for each.

The plan has been devised by AFA president Julio Grondona, who is also a senior vice president at FIFA.

The new set-up also has major political and financial implications, with presidential elections coming in October and President Cristina Fernandez the favorite to be re-elected.

"This change will imply, in effect, a new contract between the state and the AFA for televising games,'' Cherquis Bialo told reporters late Monday. "A new championship supposes a new system of economic repayment.''

In 2009 the AFA tore up its contracts with TV rights holders and transferred the package to state-run TV, in a deal that offered all first division matches free to air.

The arrangement gave clubs a much-needed income boost and is a likely to be a vote winner for Fernandez if it is expanded.

Are you thinking of a US style franchise model?

Something like that but the teams that don't pay the required money won't be safe from relegation so teams can still get promoted and relegated.

The Argentine FA will probably make sure that they will never be in this situation again.
