Arsenal fans have the nerve to mock other clubs like us bearing in mind they have not won a single thing for the last 7 years. It couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. Arsenal are in a similar position to United - once they're debt free, they'll be raking it in and the Premier League spending plans and FFP will keep it at a level playing field... problem is, like us, they've already fallen behind and are no longer a credible title threat anymore.

The fact they are talking about offering Wenger a contract at the moment shows to me the board there don't care about the results.

Wenger has the club ticking over beautifully in a financial sense.

They are out of the Cups, they aren't certain for Top 4 and they face a big ask in the CL. I can't see any footballing reason at all to reward Wenger with a contract right now - it doesn't make sense.

It's odd, usually when you refer to a manager having taken a club "as far as he can" - you're looking at, say, Redknapp taking Spurs to the Champion's League once but being unable to make it a permanent thing.

However, I'd say that Wenger has taken Arsenal as far as he can - he won them a couple of titles and they were a genuine force but slowly, piece by piece, his footballing legacy and philosophy has been broken down and sold off to more ambitious teams and for me that's what it comes down to - ambition. Arsenal the club, not the fans, are content to be a top four side without challenging for anything on any front - they won't win in Europe, they're miles off the Premier League pace and Wenger won't ever risk his "big" players in a meaningless away cup game unless he has a gun to his head.

Giving him a new contract is simply because he's Arsene Wenger... the professor... the man who made Arsenal the modern, well-run, financially stable club that they are... not because he's done well recently.

8 years without a trophy for a club of Arsenal's size is ridiculous, quite frankly.

One of the main issues with Arsenal is. It's all well and good selling your best players and finishing Top 4 still. But the problem Wenger and the owners have now is that they charge their supporters an absolute fortune to watch a game at the Emirates. Everything there is a rip-off. On top of that they have sold players they bought for peanuts for some huge sums of money and put nothing back into the team. Didn't they sell Highbury for a fair whack?

To be honest it just appears to most that they are ripping off the fans, lining their own pockets. They must have paid off their stadium by now surely. You aren't going to get anywhere by selling your top stars. If it wasn't for RVP, they would have missed out on Top 4 last season. Their model is flawed. And when you look at the wage that Wenger takes now, their fans will question it. He gets paid more than some of their players. It's shoddy

I'm not sure the Wenger criticism is fair - a lot depends on who is behind the change in financial model. If it is him then it is reasonable - if not then he has probably over performed versus his spend on transfers and wages for years and is probably now tracking about where those values ought to put the club. A model based on consistent over performance over your peers is clearly one which will come unstuck at some point.

When Arsenal spend big money (compared to other teams) Wenger won things, since they have been economising (roughly since Abramovich took over at Chelsea) they have won nothing.

In any other walk of life, managers generally get paid more than their staff. I don't see why it should be any different in football.

I tend to agree but would the comparison hold for other entrainment industries such as cinema (where I would assume the stars are paid more than those who direct them)?
