Mertesacker is a very good defender. However his pace or lack of rather, Arsenal's high line & the absence of Vermaelaen, their only other good defender, will leave him badly exposed.

Arsenal have basically stepped out of the champions league places this year. I'll be gutted if we don't take that 4th spot. We'll never get a better chance. It's not every season one of the clubs up there implode.

Right, all joking aside lads, has anyone seen gracious gooner?

I'm starting to get worried he's gone and done something silly.

I feel slightly sorry for wenger in some respects and then not at all in others. i think he has found many a decent young player and helped make them into potential world beaters, only for them to pack their bags at the first sign of barcelona or milan etc. interest. Hleb and Flamini are prime examples of players who both enjoyed one season blinders and then displayed great disloyalty in leaving straight away, karma is a bitch though as both of their careers have suffered for it. Again similar things happened to kolo toure, Cashley Cole, gael clichy and samir nasri. Its no good signing youngsters, developing them and then selling them before they reach their peak if you are a big club, this is the role of the wigans of the world where money is tight. If Arsenal had managed to keep 90% of players they took from obscurity and shot to superstardom they would still be right up there imo.

Its still not clear to me who is responsible for the lack of spending, is it their board who restricts funds and wage budgets to wenger which then allows their players to have their heads turned by bigger contracts from other clubs. or is it wenger for some bizarre reason, of which one can only assume to be pride, that refuses to spend big? whoever it is, this is the reason i don't feel particuarly sorry for them.

In general i don't think the high amount of foreign players (even by premierleague standards) at the club in the past did them any favours when it came to loyalty, a lack of homegrown leadership that could be seen in the carras, gerrards, scholes', giggs and terrys perhaps took away the "foundation" of the squad and club and detracted from its stability, but thats just my opinion and i accept its very speculative.

From a neutral point of view it is a bit of a shame because while we all know wenger can be a bit of a prat at times, you have to respect his ability and earlier achievements in the game, from a liverpool perspective its all good news though

I feel sorry for them a bit as well - I mean first Danny Rose scores his one & only goal of his career against them and now Kyle Walker does the same!
Reminds me of when Massimo Taibi put in his one & only amazing performance for the Scum against us...
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

You could same the same thing about us when Assou-Ekotto and Bassong both scored in the first game of 2009/2010 season

So many **** players have scored their one and only goal against us. Or one of a couple of goals.

Didn't Jardel play 15 times for Bolton without scoring and then grab a couple against us in the League Cup or something? Same with Postima at Spurs.

Bassong and Ekottu like you say.

Used to hate Steve Watson because he always seemed to score against us when he was at Newcastle. The ginger ****ing ****.

                            Erik Edman
                            Adam Tanner

The list goes on and on.
