Sissoko was crap after his 3rd game too and was dropped towards the end of the season.

He's poor technically but a powerhouse, teams couldn't handle him at times but he's not great.

Gonzalo Higuain set to seal £23m move to Arsenal from Real Madrid

              • Striker's father says negotiations are 'very advanced'
              • Argentine to fly to London for medical

Arsenal are close to sealing a £23m deal for Gonzalo Higuain after the Real Madrid striker's father revealed that negotiations are "very advanced".

The Argentine has been in talks with the north London club since being told he can leave the Bernabéu this summer.

Jorge Higuain, who also acts as one of his son's representatives, told Fox Sports Argentina, "We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal. I will luckily be able to see my son in the Premier League soon."

Higuain is expected to fly to London this week to undergo and medical.

"There isn't anything signed yet, but the negotiations are very advanced," Higuain senior added.

"We haven't spoken about the contract yet. Arsenal have made a great offer, in the same way as Juventus."

i always hoped we'd sign him - reckon he'd do well for us - just a goalscorer who gets in the right places and bundles it in of his arse if he has too, a bit like hernandez at united

He wouldn't fit into Rodgers preferred formation though, so doubt he'd be much use here.

Neither does Borini though. I think he'd be amazing up top on his own, but we already have Suarez and Sturridge for that position.

Which is probably why we play him out wide.

Can't remember when it was, but in an article last year Rodgers outlined what is required of a CF in our formation and it involved a lor more than poaching for goals. Basically Suarez couldn't have been more suited for it.

Arsenal are currently in Vietnam on their pre-season tour of Asia, and are still apparently healthilly supported there, despite not winning a trophy since approximately the 1930s.
The healthiness of their support was demonstrated by one young fan who kept up with Arsenal's team coach for almost 15 minutes, much to the delight of the players on board who chanted "sign him up".

After an assist from a nearby motorbike the coach eventually stopped to allow the running man to board. Many rounds of applause and autographs followed.
You see, football does still have a heart. Occasionally...

John Cross feels the frustration of Gunners' fans as the summer that should have been different has a strangely familiar feel

It feels like you could write the same about Arsenal every summer.

This is the most important transfer window of Arsene Wenger's reign. Just like last year and the year before. And it is again. But this one is different.

Why? Because it's out there. Arsenal's chief executive Ivan Gazidis went public way back in June to say the club had new "financial firepower" because of their commercial deals.

My reading of that very public statement was that the board wanted it made clear that Arsenal had money to spend, they were backing Wenger and leaving it up to Wenger to spend it.

No more excuses, Arsene. No more misguided pieces saying Arsenal are skint. They're not, they haven't been and they certainly aren't now. They can compete with the big boys.

Going public was a clever move bearing in mind Wenger's reluctance in the past to spend big. So don't blame anyone but Wenger if the deals don't come off. It's his choice.

And, quite frankly, the blame game has begun. Arsenal fans are getting twitchy. Target No1 was Gonzalo Higuain. Arsenal had a deal in place, personal terms agreed and then Real Madrid moved the goalposts. The price went up and Higuain joined Napoli.

Target No2 Wayne Rooney seems destined for Chelsea . Target No3 Luis Suarez is vying with Gareth Bale to become the transfer saga of the summer.

It's all about the clause. Let's not be naive here. Suarez wants out. His representatives have made that clear by revealing the clause to interested clubs to get him out of Liverpool.

Arsenal bid £40,000,001 with good reason . Suarez's camp claim the clause gets him out of there. Liverpool insist it doesn't. My information is that Suarez hasn't given up on that yet.

But either way, that saga will run and run. Robin van Persie made it hard for Arsenal to keep him last summer when Manchester United came in. Can Liverpool keep an unhappy player?

And make no mistake, he is unhappy. That very precise Arsenal bid tells you all you need to know. That's a come and get me plea if ever I saw one.

But will the deal happen? I wish I could say. My suspicion is that the odds are against Arsenal. Ironically, Liverpool probably saw the stick Arsenal got for selling van Persie to United and decided they can't sell to another English club.

The story, however, isn't over yet. Expect it to go well into August. If the clause is not what it's all cracked up to be then expect Arsenal to go slightly higher. But they won't match £55m.

Sooner rather than later (otherwise you run out of time) then a Plan B must be looked at. Because there would be uproar if Arsenal, having declared there's money to spend, don't spend it.

One bad result next season would leave some frustrated fans calling for Wenger's head, calling for the board to go and calling for a new manager. Arsenal really are on a knife edge here.

Furthermore, Arsenal need more than a striker. They've been looking at a keeper (Julio Cesar, Asmir Begovic), centre half (Ashley Williams), midfielder (Marouane Fellaini) and the only thing they've come up with is Yaya Sanogo, a French under-20 striker from Auxerre.

It's far from ideal. The fans are frustrated, the players are wondering and the questions are getting tougher.

From what I hear, there are doubts on Fellaini because of the price, would he fit into Arsenal's system and does he prefer Manchester United? Personally, I think he'd be great.

They need to get busy before the window shuts. After all, there is not just money to spend on transfer fees, but wages too.

Gervinho is set to join Roma , Nicklas Bendtner is hoping to go to Malaga and, on top of that, Sebastien Squillaci has left, Andrey Arshavin has gone and big earners are off the wage bill with up to £300,000-a-week being saved.

Funnily enough, the mood in the dressing room is great. There's a feel good factor. But I think that may drain away if deals aren't delivered to turn Arsenal into contenders. They are not far away. But they need two, maybe three big players.

Having been on tour with Arsenal, I've seen at close hand the tension at board level. Gazidis knows this window is crucial. But you can't knock a guy who has offered big money for Higuain and now £40,000,001 for Suarez.

Is there tension between Wenger and Gazidis? Not that I saw in Asia. They seem to get on well. Do they have slightly different views? Probably. But then I don't always agree with my boss. I like him though.

Gazidis has laid it on the line: the money is there. Wenger seems reluctant to spend it. That's where Arsenal's split personality comes in.

It promises to be an interesting transfer window. But if Arsenal end up with no-one of note then expect a riot by mid-September following the first defeat after the window has shut.
