He's no Phil Jones, that's for sure !

When you think about it though, Coates is 2yrs younger than Andy Carroll, so in that time he's going to learn and add a lot more to his game, on top of what he already knows and has got him this far in his short career.

Hopefully we've bought a little gem here.

A massive improvement on the big Greek too, even at this young age.

Apart from a couple of dodgy passes and a tendency to put too much weight on a pass I think he's looked good so far.

            Remarkable given his age.

Agree. He did look a little scared at times but he's got good basic skills, he's big and he's reasonably quick. And although some of his execution was wayward, the passes he tried showed more vision the Carra style hoofs. Promising debut I thought.

I thought Coates did well, considering.

He has a tendency to go in to the challenge and commit himself, which can be dangerous. Especially when it is combined with the fact he tends to leave the defensive line and go to the ball when it's in the midfield.

But this will be coached and he certainly has the fundamental defensive qualities to hit the ground running. Seems to be comfortable on the ball and I think with time, he'll be quite a commanding centre half.

'Coates will be a big hit'

John Scales is confident Sebastian Coates will go on to play a big part in Liverpool's future.

The Uruguayan defender arrived at Anfield on the back of an impressive Copa America where he was crowned young player of the tournament.

Scales feels he has all attributes to be a big success in a red shirt and is convinced he will go from strength to strength under the influence of the likes of Jamie Carragher.

"I've seen glimpses of him in action for Liverpool and during the Copa America. He's obviously adapting to the pace of the Barclays Premier League and that will take him a little bit of time, but I like what I've seen," Scales told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"He won the young player of the tournament at the Copa America so you can see that he is a talent. I think having Suarez there, a fellow Uruguayan, will help him too.

"I think he's got a good mental attitude and the right personality to be a success at Liverpool.

"He can only benefit from having the likes of Jamie Carragher there; senior players who can help him to progress and improve as a player.

"They know all about the ethos of the club and I think he'll be excited about learning more and bedding in at Liverpool. I expect him to be central part of that team over the next few years."

The Reds have made a promising start to 2011-12 as they continue develop under the leadership of Kenny Dalglish.

Scales has been delighted by the way the Scot has gone about his job and reckons everything is pointing towards a bright future.

"The top four is definitely within reach," said Scales. "When you look at the strength of some of the other teams I think that is a very realistic target.

"The new structure is coming along nicely. There is an excitement about the place and I've certainly got a buzz about watching Liverpool again.

"It will obviously take time for the all of the new players to completely settle in but I'm incredibly excited - just like everyone else - that Kenny is back. I think there was a renewed zest about the players when he came in and that was reflected in the performances in the second half of last season.

"Steven Gerrard coming back in will give everyone a boost too and I'm sure those lads can't wait to play with the skipper when he is in top gear.

"I think the new boys have already shown that they have a big future ahead at Liverpool. Kenny has great strength in depth now."

He showed some glimpses tonight of just how good his distribution is, aiding quick counter attacking play. The mistakes will get ironed out and we're going to have a very composed centre back on the books for next season

Yep he will make mistakes but I am mega encouraged after that. I want him in the team to be honest.

I thought he recovered well after the mistake for their goal, glad it didn't affect him too much, hopefully he'll learn from this.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I don't, not yet. There's too much at stake at the moment and I can't see him breaking up a back four of Kelly, Skrtel, Agger & Enrique. Johnson's got a job to get back in the side too now, unless he's shifted over to the left and Enrique's pushed further forward.

                                Team for WBA should be

                                Reina
                                Kelly Skrtel Agger Enrique
                                Gerrard Lucas Adam
                                Maxi Suarez Bellamy
