I's also like to see us develop him as another ball playing CB would be massively valuable

      Interview with Coates.

      What a likable guy.

I really hope he gets to play for as long as Agger is out as he needs more minutes.

There isn't any good reason to have Carra in the team ahead of him with PL season being basically over

I wouldn't count on him get much playing time.

I'd call that a terrible decision and waste if that turns out to be the case.

He'll learn **** by sitting on the bench atm and given that Carra's days are numbered and that we don't really have much to play for in the league, I cannot comprehand how not playing him is in the team's best interest as long as Agger is injured.

If this is the case we can just add it to the multitude of terrible decisions made between the end of last season and now.

Not giving Coates experience in the Premiership given one of our first choice centre backs is out and our league season is over seems crazy.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I like him, he's a big old unit, has a goal like the one v qpr in his locker too, he'll hopefully be like a Sami with more flair, but if he's anywhere near the defender Sami was then that'll do me.

Seems quite an affable lad, just hope the lack of games does'nt get him down, or make him wonder if his career would be better progressed elsewhere.

The situation is absolutely barmy. Coates should be playing in the league every week, we have nothing to play for at all so there is no reason for Carra to be in the team

I think he'll go soon after Suarez

There is one plausible explanation, though we're not going to like the idea of it.

What if Coates is not playing because he hasn't adapted to the style of football over here as well as we might have liked? What if the coaching staff have some serious concerns about the guy? We do not, after all, have the best of records in bringing players over from South America. Lucas, eventually, has been a plus, but what about the likes of Gonzales, Paletta, Leto and Insua? None of them terrible players, but none of them at all fit for the level, or maybe also the culture & style of football.

Lets face it, virtually none of us had ever heard of Coates before we were linked with him, and those who had knew very little based on a few international performances in his native environment. Adapting to the pace, power and physicality of the Premiership is a huge task though, especially for a young lad like Coates. Some pretty good foreign footballers with an awful lot more experience have failed miserably in England in the past.... Morientes springs to mind. As do Veron, Shevchenko, Forlan, Crespo, Tomasson etc.

Now this is utter conjecture and I could be miles off the mark, but we on the outside looking in see a 6ft whatever guy, highly rated in his homeland and think there is no reason he won't be the business and should be playing right away. But thats really a rather simple way of looking at it. How many South American defenders have really made a great impression in this country? And would we be thinking the same about him if his name was Steve Coates from Burnley, or would people be suggesting that his lack of first team action by now was another sign of the "disasterous buy English policy" along with the Downings and Carrolls, and concluding that he must either be ****, or just not ready for first team action yet?

Yeah, that was a great goal v QPR, the guy obviously has some technique and I'm not suggesting he's rubbish, but perhaps he just isn't as far along in his development as we'd like, hasn't settled or acclimatised well, and although there is a valid argument that game time can only be good for him, perhaps the coaching staff do have serious concerns.

Or maybe I'm barking completely up the wrong tree, but its not like Kenny has failed to put faith in younger players when the opportunity has been there, and he's certainly not been shy of playing the player newly acquired ahead of others with arguably more to offer (thinking Henderson & Downing ahead of Kuyt / Maxi for example). Coates is the exception to this. Maybe I'm a million miles off, but perhaps we should be considering more possible reasons for this than simply favouring the aging Carra (who was afterall roundly benched in favour of Agger / Skrtel for most of the season).
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                          Mine angry and defrauded young?

“Sometimes I think about all that, but I do not know if this will hurt my national team chances,” he conceded.

“You have to prioritise other things, because a footballer’s career is short, and Uruguay cannot make a difference financially. It's why you choose to leave and, that’s what I did.

“But it’s so hard for me to be a substitute and not play every weekend.

"I knew when I came to Liverpool that it was going to be hard to play, because it has a huge history.

“Also, we have great defenders here. In fact, there is a Liverpool legend in front of me, Jamie Carragher.

"I had the dream of playing, and I thought I was going to have more opportunities here at Liverpool than the opportunities I am having.

“But I do know that Liverpool trust in me and that I am going to play more matches next season.”
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

He'll be great once he gets the experience needed to play in games to get experience.
