I can't believe he didn't want to address the relegation issue, in my opinion he just had to keep cutting away at a small wage budget and in the end it caught up with him. Don't see how him going 'we're **** actually' would have turned their season around. They lacked goal scorers and had no money to buy any. Eventually that told.

I think he's a really good manager and if he ever ends up able to buy and develop a stable squad (as Moyes did at Everton say) I think he would do consistently well.

I do think he could have dealt with Wigan's relegation a whole lot better too. They sank without a fight. He had no answers. He didn't seem to have a plan B. I thought even given their financial situation it was damning.

That said I do agree he's a good manager and would do well the better the squad he has at his disposal. I just feel he's very set in his ways, and doesn't cope with things not going well. He doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes, unlike our current manager.

Sounds more like Lacina Traore is being sent back to Monaco with his injury. Bit of a **** up really from the Bitters signing him. The Lukaku injury plus this as pretty much ended their season barring a miraculous win at the Emirates in the FA Cup QF. No away goals in weeks and defeats clocking up quickly with just Naismith up front!

It's just bad luck really. He was injured when they signed him, which was a risk, but he's injured the other leg now, so you can't predict that.

They are really short up front now though, their season has fell apart.

Another Martinez gripe while I'm here. He is king of the player nicknames. It irritates the hell out of me. My personal favourites are "Naisee" for Naismith and "Stevie P" for Steven Pienaar. You're not at school any more Roberto!

I wonder if he ever actually went to skool and if he did, what did he do there, certainly spent his time wisely.

I don't think we are the right people to judge the impact of his words really. The people who matter are the players. My feeling is that it has mostly worked for him.

I just don't feel that Wigan gave up without a fight. they just didn't do the stereotyped things that people think show passion - which usually means hoofing the ball into the box and running about like mad men. We've seen plenty of teams go down trying that approach too.

I think he is very determined that certain things should be done a certain way but unlike you I don't think that change for changes sake is necessarily better. I do think a lack of variety/adaptability will hold him back to some degree but I also believe he pretty much maximized Wigan's potential and is doing well at Everton.

Yep, a mistake he's paying for now.

I sit next to a pretty reasonable bluenose at work. He is quite critical of Martinez - says he doesn't learn from his mistakes and is poor at making changes in games to correct glaring issues. He also has serious doubts about his player judgement and his habit of using players who aren't fit.

I think the nickname thing comes from managers that are ex-footballers.

Sure, you get the odd one that is desperate to be part of this epic bantz (Steve McLaren, I'm looking to you) that tries this pally-pally approach, but predominantly it's managers that have been part of a group where everybody has a nickname and the habit just sticks.
