Did the magic number always used to be 40 points? would be surprised if the bottom 4 got 30 !

Starting with the most recent the points tally of the highest place team in the relegation zone has been

28, 34, 34, 33, 34, 37, 35, 33, 36, 36, 39, 30, 34, 36, 38, 34, 33, 33, 42 (2002/2003), 36, 34, 33 (1999/2000)

22 Seasons finished since the turn of the millennium and only needed 40 twice. 35 would have been sufficient 13 times!

40 has just been seen as the total that you are (almost) guaranteed to be safe if you get to and it seems only once has that not been the case. So probably a decent rule of thumb
