" The Guardian understands that if the stadium is not finished, Everton is obliged to pay to return"
That sentence feels somewhat incomplete? Return what? To Woodison? Well obviously they have no other location. The dock to its original condition of not being filled in? Seems silly as I am sure some other operator will happily take the venue to develop it for a different purpose (accommodation for instance if anyone wants to live next door to a poo farm). Edit oh wait, the sentence after also looks mangled, yeah. Return it to a dock
soz **** edit
The Guardian understands that if the stadium is not finished, Everton is obliged to pay to return Bramley-Moore Dock to the condition in which it found it. Experts suggested that such a bill could run to tens – if not hundreds – of millions of pounds. Everton said it was highly improbable it would have to pay those costs and declined to disclose its current estimate of this liability.
It would be funny on the day of their relegation but genuinely they could end up being wiped out if that happened. A perfect storm of a global recession, stadium costs overrunning (as no doubt will happen based on the costs of labour and materials since they have started) and a relegation would surely finish them off. Mike Ashley might end up buying them and turning that stadium into a sports direct
Obviously stadium building costs will rise, but it’s borrowing that’s getting much more expensive. If they couldn’t wrap up funding when interest rates were low, I’m not sure how they will fair better now or in the near future.
