The EU courts have ruled that current Premier League broadcasting rights are against EU rules.

BSkyB shares fell 3% as the news came out.

A pub landlady has won the latest stage of her fight to air Premier League games using a foreign TV decoder.

Karen Murphy had to pay nearly £8,000 in fines and costs for using a cheaper Greek decoder in her Portsmouth pub to bypass controls over match screening.

But she took her case to the European Court of Justice.

The ECJ now says national laws which prohibit the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are contrary to the freedom to provide services.

The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN.

It can't go to appeal as the ECJ is top of the tree. They'll remit the case presumably to the Supreme Court to make a ruling that follows the judgement and makes it UK compatible

I think it's ****ing brilliant news.

It's not going to have much of an impact on people going to live games. It'll impact on Sky (bothered?) and it'll be good for the local pub if more decide to show the Saturday afternoon PL games.

There is a law in Britain which forbids live football being shown during 2.45 and 5.30. So I dont think it will lead to Sat afternoon games coming about. But there will definatly be more of a choice of whats being shown at other times. Plus it might make going to the pub cheaper as they dont have to pay the massive amounts it costs to have subscription.

A lot of pubs go out of business because they cant afford to have it, and then lose customers, or they have it and it cripples them financially.

My local pays £800pm for Sky and had to stump up £300 for the Haye fight a few months back. However it's pretty much the only pub in town that shows sport so it pays for itself.

Have they got different rules to say an individual? If so, it's unfair (I think it costs around £60 for a basic SKY subs).

It's not unfair - the pub uses broadcasts to make money, the individual is just watching it at home.

I was completely shocked by it too. Pubs have to pay more than individuals and that's why the little pint glass appears in the bottom corner of the screen when the footy is on - proves that they have the pub subscription service.
