The metro (can't find the link) are saying that while it may open up the market for decoders, the Premier League may clamp down on pubs using them as transmitting 'protected works' breaches copyright laws. And that the pub landlords/landladies might not be able to use the card to show football to customers, only for personal use.

Yeah I heard that too.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostThe metro (can't find the link) are saying that while it may open up the market for decoders, the Premier League may clamp down on pubs using them as transmitting 'protected works' breaches copyright laws. Something to do with transmitting another companies graphic and soundtrack whilst the football is being played.

It won't only affect the PL. The ruling means that that pubs will be free to show whatever sport they like from whatever league they want.
It will affect the Spanish and Italian leagues.
The league that it really won't affect is the Bundesliga because they have lower ticket prices.
They will come out stronger thanks to this.Stop the cyberhate

from now on I will skip talking about our finances. That is a promise and will save myself from looking like a

Its not legal though is it?Originally posted by ChesterDave View PostWhere on earth do you live? There are plenty of places to watch 3pm football on a Saturday.
Edit: All I could find on it was this
No games kicking off at 3 pm on a Saturday, the traditional British kick-off time, may be broadcast live on television in Britain, with the exceptions of the FA Cup Final and the Scottish Cup Final. This is to ensure attendances at lower league games taking place at the same time as Premier League fixtures that might otherwise be broadcast on television. To avoid this blackout, the last day of the Premier League, when all ten games must kick off simultaneously, is always played on a Sunday.
Live radio broadcasts are permitted, both nationally and locally; these may be simulcast on the internet, depending on the broadcaster. Viewers outside the UK can still watch these games live on foreign broadcasters, thus creating somewhat of a grey market within the UK with viewers able to subscribe to or watch streams of foreign channels.Last edited by Alex; 05-10-11, 10:53 AM.*Except Michael, who died.

It benefits lawyers at the end of the day as if you're not "hooked up" on things like this, you could be bullied easily by the major players such as SKY and ESPN. Obviously that woman did her homework.
This ruling still leaves ways to work around it, for SKY and ESPN. I've read that it stated that copyright laws can be enforced for "packaged" productions, meaning all the fancy graphics that you see (such as scores, tickers etc). This is all ****ed up and open to interpretation. Are we winning?

That's bollocks.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostI have no idea how this is good news. Pubs will be free to show 3pm PL games on a saturday, which will lead to falling attendances for the smaller clubs, as some of their fans will opt to just go down the local to watch Man Utd instead of attending their own club's games, so ultimately, the lower division smaller clubs will go out of business.
We'll end up with 2 professional divisions and about 40 odd clubs gone bust, loads of people out of work and a load of ****.
Plus, PL clubs will see a fall in attendances as some of their fans will go to the pub instead. And they'll receive less money from Sky - how will they make up for the shortfall....oh yeah, even MORE expensive tickets.
Great....
A lot of pubs already show these games. The games are also available on streams. If people support their local team, they will continue to watch them live as they always have done.
Name me one fan that would rather watch a match in a pub than go to Anfield, given the choice.Oh I don't know.

A lot of pubs show these games on the 'quiet' - if they are legally allowed to do it, they'll publicise the **** out of it.Originally posted by dom9 View PostThat's bollocks.

And re your second point, there will be a portion of people who go to watch their local team now, in order to watch some football - and there'll be some of those who will **** that off in favour of going down the pub to watch the big clubs. Especially in the winter when the weather turns **** and a cosy afternoon in the pub will be much more attractive an option.
I know people who have done it and still continue to do so at times, due to internet streams or 3pm football pubs, and big PL games going on at the same time as their local clubs play - so with all due respect, it isnt 'bollocks' because i know it already happens right now.
I'm not talking about a fan who'd rather watch in the pub than go to ANFIELD. I'm talking about fans of lower league clubs.
But even talking about Liverpool fans, there'll be some who WOULD rather watch in the pub, maybe for financial purposes, if they live far away and find the time/money needed to travel to be an inconvenience.

I dont think its an issue with the bigger clubs Dom. A lot of the time on saturday I go to watch Col Utd because its lower league football and a good laugh. But given the choice if Liverpool were on TV Id watch them at 3pm every time. So I think the point is Lower league clubs will lose out because everyone is watching their team on Tele. Instead of going to their local club to watch something.*Except Michael, who died.

Exactly.
I know loads of fans of lower league clubs who, if there's a big PL game available to watch on the telly and easily accessible, will often opt for the pub instead of going to their local club.
Ultimately these lower league clubs could potentially lose a significant portion of their regular matchday crowds and for clubs like these, even losing as little as 500 punters through the turnstiles, can be catastrophic.
