Andrew Cole: Man accused of racially abusing ex-footballer

Andrew Cole is heavily involved in football's anti-racism campaigns
Two men have been charged in connection with alleged racist abuse against ex-Manchester United footballer Andrew Cole on a Dublin-to-Manchester flight.

Lee Patrick Byrne, 28, from Dublin, was charged with a racially-aggravated public order offence and Gregory Horan, 26, of no fixed address, with being drunk on a plane.

The pair were arrested when the flight landed in Manchester on Sunday.

Mr Byrne and Mr Horan were remanded on bail by Trafford magistrates.

Mr Cole, 42, is heavily involved with the Kick It Out campaign along with other black footballers, which aims to stamp out racist abuse from the stands and in the dressing room.

Plugging his new book in the Sunday Times Sol Campbell claims he would have been England captain for 10 years if he had been white. Bollocks. Much of the job is about dealing with the media anyway and he his relationship with them has never been great. I don't think he was always first pick for 10 years anyway?

I seem to remember Paul Ince being one of the best England captains of recent times.

Sol Campbell is clearly a racist himself...

On a serious note, There is no doubt the FA is made up of the old boy network, but it was the England manager who selects the captain. Campbell was hardly the most inspiring human being after his move from Spurs to Arsenal. Nor was he a vocal player. He had well documented personal problems off the pitch, and had showed up psychological problems later on. Perhaps the guy was just not captain material.

He probably should have got the armband before Owen though, but I don't think race was an issue there.

Yannick Sagbo: Hull to defend striker 'vigorously' after charge
Hull will "vigorously defend" striker Yannick Sagbo after he was charged with improper conduct for social media posts relating to the 'quenelle' gesture.

Sagbo, 25, posted a picture on twitter of Nicolas Anelka making the gesture - linked with anti-semitism - alongside the word "legend".

A ban could rule him out of the FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United.

"We'll defend him vigorously because we don't think Yannick has tried to offend anybody," said Hull boss Steve Bruce.

Hull, who have until Tuesday to respond to the FA charge, said they will seek a personal hearing.

Bruce added: "We could lose him, and especially with semi-finals and finals coming up and Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic not available, then of course it would be a big blow to us."

French-born Cameroon international Benoit Assou-Ekotto, 30, who is on loan at QPR from Tottenham, has been charged with the same offence as Sagbo.

Anelka was banned for five games and fined £80,000 for making the sign after scoring against West Ham in December, and was sacked by West Brom.

The striker claimed he made the gesture, described as an inverted Nazi salute, in support of his friend Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, a French comedian who has been convicted seven times of anti-Semitic crimes.

Not just this one. It defies any sort of logic really.

They seem to be imposing a moral code of conduct on the people in their profession but in their personal lives, but without the burden of guilt associated with a proper process, nor rigorous back ups that organisations like governments have in place.

We all know that if you are charged by the FA then a guilty verdict results. They are straying into very dangerous territory with this one. What are they thinking?

Where will it stop? Will they start charging the likes of Giggs and Terry because they have been morally wrong in their extra marital circumstances off the pitch? How are they defining where that line is now drawn?

I guess this is the appropriate thread for this:

Malky Mackay and Iain Moody face no FA action over texts

Former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay and head of recruitment Iain Moody will face no action over allegations they shared racist and sexist texts.

The Football Association said it had carried out a "thorough" investigation into the language used in the messages.

It found "the communications were sent with a legitimate expectation of privacy".

But both men have been spoken to "about the inappropriateness of terms used in the messages".

The FA added in a statement: "To date, the FA's policy in cases such as this has been to not bring charges in respect of private communications sent with a legitimate expectation of privacy."

In the 11-month investigation 27 witnesses were spoken to by the FA, which said the process was delayed by "serious concerns" over "the circumstances in which particular evidence provided to the FA had been given".

"The nature of these concerns, which the FA treats with the utmost seriousness, has necessitated significant further inquiries by the FA and the liaison with external law enforcement agencies," it said.

                            More to follow
If that is the FA policy why did they spend 11 months looking into the incident?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
