    I don'nt think the position they played in (or didn't) really matters. I suspect it's more a matter of:
    1) their education (other managers they have worked with)
    2) their man management skills (can they relate to their players and motivate)
    3) their drive (how hard do they work)
    4) the team around them (not all managers get the support the need)

    I think people who haven't played are missing on point 1, unless they have been luckey enough to be translators to some of the best.

      Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field.
