    Bobby Petta

    Anyone remember him with Celtic?

He's just signed for my local side Adelaide United.

Should do well for us I hope. Has been on fire in training and played well in a pre-season game for us. Our manager John Kosmina is a hard nut so won't take no slacking like he has done at times in his career.

Can't wait for the A-league to start as well as the Premiership. Miss going and watching Football in the flesh.

Adelaide United FC has announced the signings of Bobby Petta and Young Socceroo (under 20) Nathan Burns, to complete its player squad for the 2006/2007 Hyundai A-League season.

Dutch born Petta joins Adelaide United FC from English club Bradford City, with the midfielder having played for a number of overseas clubs including 5 seasons with Scottish League giants Celtic. During this time, Petta also took part in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup playing against Italian Giants Juventus.

Burns has been with Australian Institute of Sport and is a member of the Australian under 20 squad.

      No limit on foreign players.

You have a squad of 20 with a salary cap of $1.5 million (I think it's 1.5 mill).
You can have one marquee signing which doesn't come under the salary cap (Yorke for Sydney for example).
And you must also have 2 u/20 players in your squad.

It's made for a pretty even competition. New Zealand Knights aside who were shizen. Wouldn't expect less from Kiwis, however they will be more competitive with the side they have for the following season.

How many of the Current Aussie side plays in The A League?

I presume with you being part of Asia, you will now compete in their CL?

Adelaide United must be good. I love how the article announcing his arrival mentions Petta is ex-Celtic. What they fail to mention is that he was released by Darlington at the end of last season
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

.tv would of done the same.

I speak to a lad in Sydney who is Scouse born and bred and supports Sydney FC. He frequented lower league games in England a lot and he believes the A-league is high League one and Low Championship level and that the better teams in the A-league like Sydney, Adelaide and Central Coast could compete with most Championship teams. Which is pretty good for its first season.

At the moment there are only 8 teams in the competition. 7 Australian and one from New Zealand. We had more teams in our old leagues but we basically scratched all but 2 of them and went for a smaller more competitive league. We had a few teams in Melbourne and Sydney and they basically went for one team per city to boost support and there was ethnic issues with some clubs which is a long long story. Once the league is more established then we want to add 4 more teams.

You've got to remember we only have 20 million people in this country and we have to fight against Aussie Rules (which averages higher attendances then the English Premier League), Rugby League and Rugby Union. The A-league is season is on at a different time to those but its still media attention and respect we have to fight for.

The first season was a brilliant success and the league averaged over 10,000 each game and there were some corker games right up there with any Premiership game in terms of entertainment. The finals series was a great success and 40,000 people packed into Aussie Stadium to see Sydney and Central Coast play a great final. The atmosphere was special.

I went to what was probably the game of the season in Adelaide where we won 3-2 with a late goal by us against Sydney. The atmosphere was awesome and the game was marvellous. I honestly thought I was watching a match in Europe.

On Bobby Petta though, he should do well for us. Our manager is no fool and a real hard nut and he believes he can get the best out of him. He's been very commited in training and did well in a friendly for us, so we believe he can do something for us during the season.

We all look forward to the 2nd season of the new league with great expectation. Teams have strengthened further and we are also now attracting better imports and of course we do have 2 teams eligable to compete in the next Asian Champions League.

What sucks is we have a stupid finals series though. Adelaide United were the most consistent side in the league season and finished top with a few rounds to spare but then we didn't do well in the finals and Sydney FC went on to win.

But the future is bright for Football in Australia that is for sure and the Socceroos success has given the A-league some momentum to build on.

                  'There's only one... Bobby Petta
He was ****E, now he's betta
                  Walkin along, singing a song
                  Walkin in a Petta wonderland'

I, shamefully, actually sang that at Parkhead once. O'Neill had turned him into a player for a brief two-month spell, and the Celtic faithful were quite taken by him. Didn't last long though.

                  He's brutal.

One chap on an Adelaide United forum actually suggested that as a chant to sing.

We were WIDELY acknowledged as being the 'best football team in the a-league by far'

Was just the bull**** refs that cost us the title

We were the best in the league last season. Easily the most consistant, which would win you the title in any other league. Just the finals are made like that of AFL etc.... Stupid really. But they're only doing it to raise the profile and gain extra revenue. Can't blame them for that really.

                              Welhung, is a smart man.

Alf aka. the ball. You don't win trophies for playing good Football, you need to put the ball into the back of the net and win games.
