Mourinho’s hands-off role stuns players

Manchester United’s players have been stunned by José Mourinho’s hands-off and distant approach at Carrington.

The United manager suffered a crushing and humiliating blow on his return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as his team’s shabby defending allowed Chelsea to run riot, claiming a 4-0 win that left them down in seventh in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Manchester City.

It can now be disclosed that some members of the United squad have been surprised by some of the Portuguese’s methods at the club’s training ground at Carrington. According to a source close to a senior United player, Mourinho cuts a distant figure, sometimes leaving his assistant, Rui Faria, to conduct training sessions while he watches from a distance or works in his office.

The former Chelsea manager will, according to the source, come out and instruct his players at the start of the session before disappearing to his desk. On some occasions he does not return, leaving the session in Faria’s hands.

It represents a change in practice from his time at Chelsea, where he was hands-on in training sessions. Mourinho’s cold approach to his players in one-to-one situations has also disappointed some United players. Some of them were expecting Mourinho to take a keen personal interest in them, but he has often cut himself off from the rest of the squad.

Some feel they would benefit more from a closer relationship with the 53-year-old — particularly after the treatment they received from Louis van Gaal, his predecessor — but Mourinho is said to prefer to keep his distance from the players.

The pressure of United’s recent poor form — they have won one of their past six league matches — appeared to be getting to Mourinho on Sunday when he held a heated exchange with Antonio Conte, the Chelsea head coach, on the sidelines after the match.

Sky Italia, who had lip-read the conversation, apparently conducted in Italian, claimed that Mourinho had accused his opposite number of humiliating him with his celebration when the fourth Chelsea goal went in. Neither Mourinho nor Conte would disclose the finer details of the exchange following the match.

Mourinho’s reputation will take a further dent tomorrow at Old Trafford if his team are knocked out of the EFL Cup by neighbours Manchester City. Pep Guardiola, the City head coach, won the first match in the latest instalment of this bitter rivalry last month when City defeated United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

After their poor recent form, Mourinho has told his players that they must stand up and be counted.

“We are really, really sad, but this is not for kids,” he said. “This is for men and we have to be men and work for the next one. I would prefer to play in the Premier League next [than in the EFL Cup] because it’s a bad feeling in the Premier League. With the combination of results, the gap to the top is six points. We’ve had a very difficult period of matches.

“Now we need to win matches. We are in this run, but there is no way to hide because I think our faces speak by themselves.”

Mourinho received some good news, however, after it appeared that Eric Bailly’s knee injury, which he suffered at Stamford Bridge, is not as bad as at first feared.

Mourinho said after the defeat that he was concerned that the Ivory Coast centre back had suffered “bad” knee ligament damage after tangling with Eden Hazard, the Chelsea playmaker.

But initial tests, conducted by United’s medical staff, suggested that Bailly could be out for less than six weeks. Marouane Fellaini will today have further tests on the knee injury he suffered as a result of a studs-up challenge by David Luiz. United believe the Belgian has suffered only minor bruising, meaning he could return either for the derby tomorrow or Saturday’s home game against Burnley.

Chris Smalling, whose error handed Chelsea a first-minute lead, was carrying an injury into the match, it is understood. The England defender picked up the knock in the win against Fenerbahce last week and will be assessed before Mourinho decides whether to risk him against City.

Phil Jones, who has not played this season because of a knee injury, is back in first-team training although no date has been set for his comeback.

Something is defo up with him. He's always been an absolute cunt but he wasn't always completely miserable and he used to fiercely back his players, now he does the opposite. Perhaps turning football matches in to wars has taken its toll, especially after doing it with Barca and Real where they have to play 5 times a season and are under insane media scrutiny.
