        Woah. Thats huge.

        What next? There were potentially some pretty serious repercussions for him.

        I must admit, there did seem to be a dismissiveness of the charges from his council that was never going to play out well. Effectively calling out the Greek Police as liars after you've consumed a £60k bar tab, he was clearly wasted.

        The bribery charges show a certain arrogance also, that you can buy your way out of trouble just because you are in Greece.

                  But given they'd just ponied up the best part of £50k for various bottles of Champagne I guess anything was possible.

                            True story, I got arrested when I was 20 on holiday in Greece (Symi). Steaming on multiple sambuccas. Me and a mate climbed onto a massive (MASSIVE) yacht in the harbour, and as we went to dive off it, the feds turned up.

                            We dove off, I swam across an international shipping channel (apparently) and they fired a shot into the air (apparently).

                            Once I go to the other side I had a slight issue in finding our clothes which were left on the side of the dock fairly close to where the Police were, and had our wallets and passports. Once I did get them and dress, I sauntered casually past the police and met up with my mate and the girls we were with.

                            After walking for a bit the Police turned up by us in cars and took us to the station at gun point. This was pretty sobering.

                            It turns out the yacht was owned by a Lebanese guy, and he was paranoid about being assassinated... Not amazing news for us. We would be taken by boat to court in Rhodes in the morning. We had our passports scanned and sent to Interpol.

                            The event that swung things in our favour was that the Lebanese guys boat was crewed by Turks, and the greeks hated the Turks. The Greek police ended up being fairly forgiving and were enjoying noising up the Turks. However the case wasn't dropped until this local jeweller was deployed to broker a 'deal'. Ultimately to point out that 2 young guys in there early 20's hammered on tons of booze were unlikely to be international assassins.

                            This all predated the internet and mobile phones, so it was pretty terrifying and I was very much imagining being front page news in the UK the following day.The relief I felt when we were released after about 36 hours was indescribable.
