yes but it didn't alter the fact that we had a large contingent of non english players. Souness went about it too quickly imo (I still reckon had saunders put away the penalty against city I think his career would have been up and running from the off) but the rules that summer had changed so we wouldn't have been able to play them all.

I think Deano is confusing the rules for European competition with the premier league rules. We also brought in Bjornebye that season and Kozma I think and we still had Whelan and Saunders in the team.
In the Europe we could only play 3 non-English players, but no such restriction existed in the league until the 3 non-EU player rule was brought in 1999.Comment

Souness started in 91-92, a season before the premier league began. We had 4 non Englishmen in our opening 2 fixtures. Haven't checked the rest. Lfc History app is great for this stuff.
Of the big names let go, they all went that season bar Houghton who went in 92-93.
I remember some sort of rule applying but I can't remember what it was. I think we all accept though that he let too many good players go in that first season and replaced them largely with poorer ones, and that's a recipe for failure.Comment

Deano is right. There was a domestic 3+2 rule in English leagues up until Mr. Bosman forced attitudes to change.

David Moyes: Champions League glory is always Manchester United's aim
David Moyes says he is targeting nothing less than Manchester United's third Champions League title this season.
Sir Alex Ferguson's successor appeared to play down United's chances of winning the competition at the weekend, admitting he does not have the "five or six world-class players" a victorious squad needs.
But ahead of Wednesday's Group A meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk, Moyes argued he would be defaulting on his duties as a United manager if he did not aim for glory in Lisbon next May.
"Of course we'll try to win the Champions League," said the Scot, who has overseen three defeats in his opening six Premier League games as boss.
"That's part of the job at Manchester United and I'll do everything I can to try to make that happen."
Rio Ferdinand has a minor groin injury and did not travel with the United squad, although Moyes was planning to rest the centre-half in any case.
"Rio has a slight groin problem," said the Scot. "It is nothing serious but I was never bringing him anyway."
Anderson, Fabio and Wilfried Zaha were also left in Manchester, but Robin van Persie is fit to start after coming off the bench during Saturday's defeat to West Brom.Comment
